DECAL SHEET REVIEW

Furball Aero-Design #F/D&S 4811
Colorful F2H-2/2P Sea Blue Banshees -- 1:48 Scale

vol_2_imageThe McDonnell F2H Banshee was a pioneer in the early days of the jet era as one of the first carrier-based jets.  It bridged the very first generation of jet aircraft technology with later developments, featuring advances in jet engine power, replacement of the .50 caliber guns with 20 mm cannons, an ejection seat, and electrically actuated flaps, landing gear, wings folds, and speed brakes. Banshees saw a wide range of combat during the Korean conflict and the last F2H in U.S. service was a Marine Corps Reserve jet withdrawn in 1961.  It was a classic airplane that paved the way for the likes of the F-4, A-4, F-8, and many other subsequent Navy jets.

This decal sheet set by Furball Aero-Design covers 16 of some of the most colorful Banshees in 1:48 scale.  It was made possible with research materials provided by Detail & Scale, and is designed to compliment Detail & Scale’s new digital reference book covering the F2H Banshee.  In the interest of transparency and impartiality, I wish to make it clear that your reviewer had nothing to do with the development of these sheets.

The markings provided here include:

The decals were printed by Cartograf and the quality does not get any better than this.  The markings are sharp and even the smallest ones are still pretty legible in 1:48 scale.  Carrier film is very thin and highly restrained.

Of course, whenever putting a white decal atop a dark surface, the issue of translucency is to be considered.  These have been printed with extra thick ink, so it should not be a problem.  The choice in airframes and color schemes are great, and I am particularly enamored the schemes from the Grim Reapers, Blue Blasters, Red Rippers, Tomcatters, and others.  The “Look” and “Life” magazine nose art featured on the two VC-61 F2H-2Ps are really neat, too.  The instructions come on four double-sided pages, printed sharply and in color, and provide technical notes and other carefully researched details on the various paint schemes.  National insignias and airframe stencils are provided for two jets.

Many thanks to Furball Aero-Design for the review sample.  You can find them on the web at http://www.furballaero-design.com/default.asp and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/FurballAeroDesign
