Furball Aero-Design #F/D&S 4808
Colors and Markings of US Navy Tomcats- Part 2
1:48 Scale

vol_2_imageThe Grumman F-14 Tomcat carried many colorful and eye-catching paint schemes in its early years, but beginning in the early 1980s, the significantly toned-down tactical paint scheme (TPS) was phased in.  Various patterns of medium and dark grays were used and, to some, the TPS colors were informally known as the “yuck and double yuck” scheme.  Still, CAG and CO aircraft (identified with the Modex number on the nose as -00 and -01, respectively) were still permitted to carry somewhat more ornate and colorful tail markings.
In this new decal sheet, Furball Aero-Design continues with their Colors and Markings of US Navy Tomcats.  This decal sheet was made possible with research materials provided by Detail & Scale, and are designed to compliment Detail & Scale’s digital reference book covering the F-14, “Colors & Markings of U. S. Navy F-14 Tomcats, Part 1:  Atlantic Coast Squadrons.  In the interest of transparency and impartiality, I wish to disclose that your reviewer had nothing to do with the development of these sheets.

Part I covered some famous F-14s from VF-32 and VF-41 (see our review here:  Part II takes scale modelers into the early to mid-1990s with some of the most colorful TPS painted Tomcats from that era.

The sheet has markings for eight F-14s:

- F-14A, Bu No. 160395, VF-33, USS AMERICA, 1992
- F-14A, Bu No. 163219, VF-103, USS SARATOGA, 1993
- F-14B, Bu No. 163225, VF-101, NAS Oceana, 1993
- F-14B, Bu No. 161862, VF-101, NAS Oceana, 1998
- F-14A, Bu No. 160923, VF-31, USS FORRESTAL, 1990
- F-14A, Bu No. 160408, VF-84, NAS Oceana, 1993
- F-14A, Bu No. 159863, VF-14, USS JOHN F. KENNEDY, 1996
- F-14A, Bu No. 161869, VF-11, USS FORRESTAL, 1991

The quality of the decal design is superlative, and the printing by Cartograph is impeccable.  The decal sheet includes full stencils for two jets.  Beyond the gorgeous printing, it’s the attention to little details that impresses me just as much, including the fidelity of the airframe stencils which include markings for the GRU-7A ejection seats, gun gas purge vents, and panel line decals to represent the glove vanes which the Hasegawa fails to represent in their F-14 kits.  While these decals are sized for the Hasegawa family of 1:48 scale Tomcats, many of these decals seem easily adapted to other 1:48 scale F-14s from other manufacturers as well.

Overall, Furball Aero-Design does another consistently great job with this offering and it will allow scale modelers to model some of most distinctive of the low-visibility Tomcats of the 1990s.  The high standard of research also shines through on the accuracy of these decals.  Interestingly, I’m pretty sure that when I was a kid, the first F-14 I got to meet up close and personal was 160923 in VF-31 colors as represented on this sheet at the 1990 Dayton Air and Trade Show.

Many thanks to Furball Aero-Design for the review sample. You can find them on the web at and on Facebook at
