DECAL SHEET REVIEW

Furball Aero-Design 72-002 MiG Masters:
F-8 Crusaders of the Vietnam War 1:72 Scale

vol_2_imageAs only their second sheet in 1:72 scale produced to date, Furball Aero-Design gives modelers a wide range of visually striking and historically significant subject on this extensive decal sheet.   The subject, as one can tell by the title, are F-8 Vietnam-era MiG-killers, ranging from the F-8C to the F-8H. Specifically, the sheet features all 18 F-8 Crusader MiG-Killers, with bonus decals for an additional eight jets.

A whopping 26 different schemes are included on this decal sheet:

  • F-8E, VF-211, 12 June 1966
  • F-8E, VF-211, 21 June 1966
  • F-8E, VF-162, 09 October 1966
  • F-8E, VF-211, 01 May 1967
  • F-8E, VF-191, 09 July 1968
  • F-8E, VF-53, 27 July 1968
  • F-8E, VF-51, 01 August 1968
  • F-8C, VF-111, 09 September 1968
  • F-8J, VF-211, 23 May 1972
  • F-8E, VF-51, 02 August 1964
  • F-8D, VF-154, 09 May 1965
  • F-8E, VMF(AW) 212, 1965
  • F-8E, VF-211, August 1967
  • F-8J, VF-211, 18 March 1971
  • F-8E, VF-211, 19 May 1967
  • F-8E, VF-211, 19 May 1967
  • F-8C, VF-24, 19 May 1967
  • F-8C, VF-24, 19 May 1967
  • F-8C, VF-24, 21 July 1967
  • F-8C, VF-24, 21 July 1967
  • F-8E, VF-211, 21 July 1967
  • F-8C, VF-111, 14 December 1967
  • F-8E, VF-162, 14 December 1967
  • F-8H, VF-51, 26 June 1968

The decals come with four double sided, full-color instruction sheets.  Each scheme is accompanied by detailed text describing the aircraft’s history and the circumstances surrounding their kill. There is also a comprehensive matrix to F-8C,D, E, J, and H aircraft loadouts, so you can be sure that your underwing stores configurations will be accurate. There are also enough data stencils (from full sets of No Step, No Push, hoist point marks, ejection seat warning triangles, rescue arrows, etc.) and national insignia for two complete airplanes.

The decal sheet itself is comprehensive, packed to the gills with markings. Furball could not have squeezed in anything more, it would appear.  Printed with precision by Catograf of Italy, there is no higher quality of printed decals on the market.

The only potential shortcoming (and it is merely an observation on my behalf) is that the black anti-skid walkways on the upper surfaces of the rear fuselage and tops of the horizontal stabilizers are not supplied as decals.  They would have to be masked and painted or just sourced from the kit’s decal sheet itself – not a problem at all.

These decals are sized for the Academy family of F-8 kits, though they can be worked to fit other 1:72 Crusaders as well.  But at least if a modeler is planning to build the Academy kit, the quality of that excellent model will be only further enhanced and complemented by the use of these decals.

Highly recommended!
