DECAL SHEET REVIEW

Furball Aero-Design 48-067
Victory Super Hornets -- 1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

The skull-and-crossbones insignia of the Jolly Rogers (callsign “Victory”) is one of the most iconic paint schemes of U.S. Naval aviation, from the WWII-era Corsairs of VF-17 to the Tomcats of VF-84 and VF-103.  Since 2005, the Jolly Rogers have operated the F/A-18F Super Hornet as VFA-103.  In this release, Furball Aero-Design provides markings for the latest and greatest schemes carried by the Jolly Rogers.

On this sheet, Furball Aero-Design provides decals for no less than eight Jolly Roger Super Hornets.  It’s a mix of CAG, CO, and line jets from the squadron.  The set is not really optimized for any one kit, and these markings can be adapted to largely any 1:48 scale Super Hornet kit, though the Hasegawa offering is generally regarded as the best in this scale.  The set holds these markings on one large decal sheet and also comes with enough stencils for two individual airframes.  The decal sheet features:

These decal sheets provide an excellent historical compilation of the many diverse paint schemes that was found among the CAG and CO jets of VFA-103 over the last few years, including their 70th and 75th anniversary schemes and the 2016 Christmas scheme.  Even the markings on the line jets are interesting.  There are also many interesting details, subtleties, and unique elements of the markings on all these airplanes, and Furball does a great job in capturing them all to the best of my knowledge.  I say this as someone who has photographed a number of these VFA-103 jets at NAS Oceana over the last two years.  These include the scoreboard and breast cancer awareness ribbon painted on the nose of the CAG jet in 2017, the centerline drop tank “Fear the Bones” art, MUTHA trophy markings, and retro VF-17 squadron badges.

However, do note an error in the instructions.  On the port side spine of the 70th anniversary scheme, you’ll see “VFA-103” partially overwritten with “Vampires.” Further, decals for the single “Vampires” marking is not on the decal sheet.  It was an error when the Furball instructions were printed, and NOT a real thing!  To be clear, VX-9 Vampires did NOT “zap” the Jolly Rodgers CAG jet anniversary scheme in an act of inter-squadron hijinks.

The quality of the decal design is superlative, and the printing by Cartograf is technically impeccable.  Colors are vibrant, in perfect register, and carrier film is very thin and exceptionally restrained.

Furball does their typical job of providing excellent markings guides and technical notes on specific airframe configurations, including deployment and post-deployment markings variations.  Full airframe stencils are also provided for these Super Hornets, including markings for the NACES ejection seats and the array of white ceramic tiles ringing the internal surface of the engine exhaust nozzles - a really great touch.

Many thanks to Furball Aero-Design for the review sample. You can find them on the web at http://www.furballaero-design.com/default.asp and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/FurballAeroDesign
