DECAL SHEET REVIEW

Furball Aero-Design 48-052 MiG-31 Canopy Frame Declas -- 1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

There are few places in which you can add more detail to the 1:48 scale AMK MiG-31 Foxhound kits.  They are awesome kits all around (see our review HERE).  One rather important detail that could be a little better and more accurate involves the Foxhound’s canopy seals.  On the MiG-31, windscreen and canopy glass are sealed to their frames in airtight fashion by distinctive pink-colored putty.  Scale modelers lamented that these details were omitted from the first kit of the MiG-31 BM/BSM.  AMK listened to the input of scale modelers and the second issue of their Foxhound has the canopy seals represented as decals in the MiG-31 B/BS kit.  Still, they could be a bit better…

Here, Furball Aero-Design provides two complete sets of canopy seal decals for either of the AMK Foxhounds.  They feature the white seal for the center section of windscreen and the pink seals for the pilot and weapon system officer’s canopies.  These are a little superior to the second AMK kit’s decal seals as this Furball set features the internal gray-colored edging, too.  The printing is flawless and very fine, and it all looks, for all intents and purposes, perfect…but perhaps a little too perfect?  That is to say that the application of the pink sealant putty on the MiG-31 tends to be a bit irregular, to my knowledge the sealant is applied by hand using a putty knife.  I’m not sure just how much of a perceptible difference this would make in 1:48 scale, and it’s really a minor nitpick on my behalf.  In sum, if you want the best representation of the canopy seals of for AMK MiG-31, this Furball set is your ticket.
