DECAL SHEET REVIEW

Fündekals Spitfires Part 1
1:32 Scale

vol_2_image

There’s no debate that the Supermarine Spitfire was among the overall most accomplished and historically significant airplanes of the 20th century.  It’s also not a surprise that the Spitfire is a beloved subject among scale modelers.  In this review, we’ll take a look at a recent sheet that spans the Spitfire’s history: Fündekals’ Spitfires Part 1.

Fündekals is a lower-cost but high-quality decal manufacturer who typically does a print run of a subject and then moves on.  Most of their releases focus on WWII subjects, but they often go into more diverse territory as well.  Their Spitfires Part 1 covers 12 distinctive and historical aircraft, each one telling a very interesting story:

These decals are beautifully printed and are in perfect register.  Carrier film is precisely applied right at the edges of each decal.  In all, they look great and receive outstanding scores for print quality, subject matter, and detail.  Speaking of subject matter, I find the range and scope of the options on this sheet to be just great, from early Spitfires including Ronny Hamlyn’s (the RAF’s ace-in-a-day) Mk. I to later variants including the American Eagle Squadron, a very rare USN Spitfire wearing invasion stripes, to the RAAF wing commander’s aircraft.  The historical notes and photos that accompany these schemes are also top-notch, reveal the depth of research done on these subjects, and add a great deal of historical and human depth to the stories behind these particular Spitfires and the missions they flew.  Further, these markings are general enough so as to be able to fit virtually any Spitfire kit by any manufacturer in this scale.

To keep costs down for the scale modeler, the instructions are not printed and included with the decals.  As with all Fündekals products, the markings guide is available as a PDF file that can be downloaded from their website.  Here’s the link for the instructions:
