DECAL SHEET REVIEW

Fündekals F-106 Stencils -- 1:72 Scale

vol_2_image

The F-106 Delta Dart built on the many strengths of the F-102 Delta Dagger while also improving its shortcomings.  The F-106 has long been widely regarded as the USAF’s ultimate Cold War all-weather interceptor – serving admirably in this role from the 1960s to the 1980s.  There is a decent selection of F-106s in 1:72 scale, from the venerable but dated Hasegawa/Minicraft kit the more recent Trumpeter F-106A and B and the Meng F-106A.  The decals in these kits are okay but their treatment of airframe stencils could have been more detailed, comprehensive, and attentive to variation.  In this review, we’ll take a look Fündekals 1:72 scale F-106A/B Stencil Data decal sheet.

Fündekals is a lower-cost but high-quality decal manufacturer who typically does a print run of a subject and then moves on.  Most of their effort is directed toward WWII subjects, but they often go into more diverse territory such as with the F-106.

This decal sheet’s treatment of F-106 stencils is truly impressive and reflects the depth of research behind this sheet.  It will add a great deal of accuracy to your model to be certain. In addition to national insignia and USAF identification markings, the sheet provides both “early” and “late” stencil variations.  “Early” refers to the stencils that were applied by the Convair factory and which F-106s typically carried until their first depot-level maintenance.  The depot repainted Delta Darts then acquired more many more stencils in different locations, especially on the wings.

The stencil decals are overall quite comprehensive, detailed, and the larger stencil text is indeed legible in 1:72 scale.  The decals cover all the markings you can want (or need!), from ejection seat warning triangles to aircraft data blocks, pitot tube stripes, rescue markings, the anti-glare panel in front of the windscreen, and a multiplicity of tiny maintenance stencils spanning the nose to the tail and everything in between.  There are also decals to make whatever tail number the builder desires.  Stencils specific to the F-106B are also included.

The markings guide makes it clear that there’s no magic formula to determine whether a particular airframe had early, late, or a blend of early and late stencil configurations.  Research on behalf of the builder will be helpful to clarify this for whatever scheme they’re working on.  If you’re using markings from the Fündekals F-106 Detla Dart decals, the markings guides do help clarify stencil patterns where possible.

The quality of decal design by Fündekals is excellent and the printing quality is right up there with Cartograf and other leaders in the decal business.  Colors are vibrant, crisp, in perfect register, and carrier film is very restrained.  Carrier film seems a bit thicker than Cartograf or Microscale products, but it’s not so thick as to worry about the need of building up layers of gloss coat to hide the edge of the carrier film.

To keep costs down for the scale modeler, the instructions and markings guide are NOT printed and included with the decals.  As with all Fündekals products, the markings guide is available as a PDF file that can be conveniently downloaded from their website.  Here’s the link for the instructions: http://www.fundekals.com/images/DeltaDart_F-106/F-106_Stencil_Inst.pdf

Many thanks to Jonathan Strickland and Fündekals for the review sample. You can find and purchase this and other Fündekals sheets on the web at: http://www.fundekals.com/
