DECAL SHEET REVIEW

Fündekals F-106 Delta Darts Part 2 -- 1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

The F-106 Delta Dart built on the many strengths of the F-102 Delta Dagger while also improving its shortcomings.  The F-106 is thus widely regarded as the USAF’s ultimate Cold War all-weather interceptor – serving admirably in this role from the 1960s to the 1980s.  Surprisingly, there are not a lot of F-106s in 1:48 scale.  Since the early 1980s, we’ve had the venerable Monogram kit, and in 2014, the Trumpeter F-106A and Bs were released.  The decals in these kits are okay but there were many more memorable schemes seen on this airplane than what can be reasonably included in the kits.  In this review, we’ll take a look at the second of two F-106 decal sheets by Fündekals that cover some of the most impressive Delta Dart paint schemes in F-106 Delta Darts Part 2.
Fündekals is a lower-cost but high-quality decal manufacturer who typically does a print run of a subject and then moves on.  Most of their effort is directed toward WWII subjects, but they often go into more diverse territory such as with the F-106.  This decal sheet covers five Delta Darts:

Just like with F-106 Part 1, the choice in schemes is excellent.  If colorful and interesting schemes are your thing, then you’ll love the marking options on this decal sheet, especially the 87th FIS and 329th FIS markings.  To me at least, those in particular will make your F-106 visually “pop.”
The quality of decal design by Fündekals’ is excellent and the printing is right up there with Cartograf and other leaders in the decal business.  Colors are vibrant, crisp, in perfect register, and carrier film is very restrained.  Carrier film seems a bit thicker than Cartograf or Microscale products, but it’s not so thick as to worry about the need of building up layers of gloss coat to hide the edge of the carrier film.

The airframe configuration notes and photos that accompany these schemes are also top-notch.  They reveal the depth of research done on these subjects, and will add a great deal of accuracy to your model.  For example, you’ll know if the scheme you are building has the mid- or late-1960s airframe configurations, early- or late-style stencils, SAGE antennas. early or late-style nose UHF antennas, the Weber ejection seat, retractable anti-collision lights, and so forth.  It’s quite the comprehensive treatment for each airplane featured here.

However, do note that these are the “scheme specific” markings (e.g., tail flashes, tail numbers, nose art) and the sheet does not include airframe stencils, national insignias, or USAF identification markings.  Those are available separately from Fündekals in their 1:48 scale F-106 stencil decal sheet: http://www.fundekals.com/deltaDart_f106_Stencils_48.html

To keep costs down for the scale modeler, the instructions and markings guide are NOT printed and included with the decals.  As with all Fündekals products, the markings guide is available as a PDF file that can be conveniently downloaded from their website.  Here’s the link for the instructions:

Many thanks to Jonathan Strickland and Fündekals for the review sample. You can find and purchase this and other Fündekals sheets on the web at: http://www.fundekals.com/
