DECAL SHEET REVIEW

Fündekals Sea Furies of the Royal Canadian Navy
1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

One of the most remarkable fighter aircraft to emerge in the late 1940s was the Hawker Sea Fury.  This airplane in many ways was the bridge between the earlier era of piston-engine fighters and the dawn of the jet age.  It was the last propeller-driven fighter to serve with the Royal Navy and was among the fastest single piston-engine aircraft ever built.  Derived from the mighty Hawker Tempest, the Sea Fury entered service in 1947 and made its mark in Korea as both a dogfighter (racking up victories against the MiG-15) and as a ground attack platform.  There were several export customers for the Sea Fury including the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) where it served as the backbone of Canadian naval airpower from 1948 to 1956.  The Sea Fury provided fleet air defense, attended to the anti-shipping/antisubmarine roles, and provided air support for the Canadain Army.  RCN Sea Furies, however, never fired a shot in anger, but came quite close to involvement in the Korean conflict.

The release of the 1:48 scale Airfix Sea Fury kit in 2018 was followed by a second issue of the export versions of the FB.11.  These kits have proven to be very popular among scale modelers with a modern tooling of the Sea Fury.  In this release, fündekals has produced a new decal sheet for RCN Sea Furies.

This set features markings for the following ten airplanes:

Every single one of these schemes is interesting and attractive, though perhaps I like markings options that deviate from what you might call expectations… non Fleet Air Arm Sea Fury schemes are different, indeed!  I really like the early overall dark grey schemes from the late 1940s, the higher-viz scheme on TG114, and the signal red wingtips and tails on TG127.

All the markings are squeezed onto a single decal sheet with no room to spare.  There are also full airframe stencils for one airplane and they appear quite comprehensive.  The quality of decal design by fündekals’ is excellent.  The printing is excellent, and it’s right up there with Cartograf and other leaders in the decal business.  Colors are vibrant, crisp, in perfect register, and carrier film is very restrained.  Carrier film seems a bit thicker than Cartograf or Microscale products, but it’s not so thick as to worry about the need to build up layers of gloss coat to hide the edge of the carrier film.

The decals themselves naturally are a highlight of this set, but the instructions are awesome.  These feature markings and painting guides seamlessly integrated with archival images of the FB.11 in RCN service, airframe-by-airframe technical notes, and essays on the aircraft’s RCN service, and detailed and frankly intriguing minutia regarding the complex history of the evolution of RCN Sea Fury markings.  You’ll learn a lot about the Sea Fury.  Further, the impressive depth of research done on this sheet is abundantly clear.  Very few, if any, aftermarket decal manufacturers provide such depth and richness behind their decals.

To keep costs down for the scale modeler, the instructions and markings guide are NOT printed and included with the decals.  As with all fündekals products, the markings guide is available as a PDF file that can be conveniently downloaded from their website.  Here’s the link for the instructions:  http://www.fundekals.com/images/SeaFury_1/RCN_Sea_Furies_48.pdf

Many thanks to Butch Heilig, Jonathan Strickland, and everyone at fündekals for the review sample.  You can find and purchase this and other fündekals sheets on the web at: http://www.fundekals.com/
