DECAL SHEET REVIEW

Flying Leathernecks #48011
USMC KC-130J Hercules -- 1:48 Scale

The ever-versatile C-130 Hercules has performed an incredible range of tasks over its lifetime, including serving as an aerial refueling platform.  The KC-130J is a multi-role tanker.  The Marine Corps’ J model can carry up to 84,000 pounds of gas, and can refuel jets and helicopters alike using hose-and-drogue refueling pods attached to outboard port and starboard wings.  When it isn’t passing gas, the KC-130J also delivers troops and cargo to where they’re needed, conducts search-and-rescue, and with the Harvest HAWK upgrade, can deliver air-to-ground Hellfire and Griffin in support of Marines on the ground.  In short, there’s very little that Marine Hercs can’t do.

Flying Leatherneck Decals’ new decal sheet provides the markings for three KC-130Js:

The decals were designed by Flying Leathernecks Decals and printed by Microscale.  The print quality is exemplary and carrier film is precisely applied right at the very edges of each marking.

This is an outstanding decal sheet overall.  In particular, I really like two schemes with the black tails – they’re quite distinctive.  Of course, there is a slight logistical problem.  No one makes a 1:48 scale KC-130J kit.  So, the instructions detail how you can convert the Italeri C-130J kit into a KC-130J.  This can be done pretty easily using parts from Polish aftermarket manufacturer Attack Squadron.  They recently released a resin cast refueling pod set and a Harvest HAWK set for the Italeri kit.  Also suggested are Attack Squadron’s Corrected Engine Nacelle set and Sponson Correction set.  You can check them out here:
