DECAL REVIEW

AoA Decals # 48-010
Battle Scooters (3): USN/USMCA-4C, A-4E, & A-4F Skyhawks in the Vietnam War -- 1:48 Scale

The legendary A-4 Skyhawk hardly needs an introduction.  This carrier-based attack aircraft was a 1950s-era design by Ed Heinemann and built by McDonnell Douglas.  Skyhawks played key roles in Vietnam, the Yom Kippur War, and the Falklands.  The A-4 is also one of the sharpest looking, nimble, and storied airplanes of the 20th century.  During the Vietnam conflict, the A-4 was the U.S. Navy’s light attack carrier-based workhorse, logging more sorties than any other aircraft in the war.  Skyhawks were there at the Gulf of Tonkin Incident and were (reportedly) the plane that dropped the last bombs of the war in 1973.  During the interim, Skyhawks did everything, from close air support to working as FACs and the bombing of strategic targets.  An A-4C from VA-76 even scored an air-to-air kill in 1967, downing an enemy MiG-17 with an unguided Zuni air-to-ground rocket.

In this release (the third of three in the 1:48 scale Battle Scooter Series), AoA Decals provides markings for 13 jets.  They are sized for the Hasegawa kits but can certainly be adapted to the Monogram or Testors/Fujimi kits (some more readily than others).  Here, three sheets cover the USMC and USN A-4s from five squadrons:

These decals were printed by Cartograf, and the quality does not get any better than this. The airframe stencils are sharp and even the smallest ones are still pretty legible in 1:48 scale.  The choice in airframes and color schemes are great, and I am particularly enamored with the Wake Island Avengers and Mighty Shrikes schemes.  The instructions come on four double-sided pages, printed sharply and in color, and provide technical notes, stencil placement guides, and carefully researched details on the various paint schemes.  Stencils are provided for one jet, and if you intend to do more than one scheme from the sheet, you can purchase additional A-4 stencil sheets from AoA directly (AoA 48-004).  They’re the best stencils out there for the A-4 in this scale, bar none.

Overall, this is a must-have sheet for fans of the Skyhawk (including your reviewer) and for those interested US naval aviation subjects in general.

Many thanks to AoA Decals for the review sample. You can find them on the web at http://www.aoadecals.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/AOAdecals.
