DECAL REVIEW

AoA Decals # 48-007
The Intruders' Sandbox: USN/USMC A-6E Intruders in the Libyan Strikes and Desert Storm
1:48 Scale

The Grumman A-6 Intruder was the primary long-range strike aircraft of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps from 1963 to 1997.  Following its distinguished service in the Vietnam war, the A-6 saw combat in the 1986 airstrikes on Libya in Operations PRAIRIE FIRE and EL DORADO CANYON, and in 1991, the Intruder was a deep-strike workhorse during Operation DESERT STORM.  Here, AoA Decals provides marking for historic Navy and Marine Intruders that flew combat over Libya and Iraq.

This decal sheet is designed to fit the Hobby Boss A-6E TRAM Intruder kit (all of these were A-6Es equipped with the TRAM turret under the nose).  That said, some of these schemes can be used on the Kinetic and Revell kits with no problem at all, but double check to see if the checkerboard art on the rudder of the VMA(AW)-533 jets will fit on those other kits properly.  The single decal sheet has all the squadron markings and stencils for these low-viz (or TPS [tactical paint scheme]) jets.  In all, seven different schemes are featured:

- A-6E, BuNo. 152948, VA-34 Blue Blasters, USS AMERICA, Operations PRAIRIE FIRE & EL DORADO CANYON (1986)

- A-6E, BuNo. 161676, VA-55 War Horses, USS CORAL SEA, Operations PRAIRIE FIRE & EL DORADO CANYON (1986)

-A-6E BuNo. 161685, VA-85 Black Falcons, USS SARATOGA, Operations PRAIRIE FIRE & EL DORADO CANYON (1986)

- A-6E BuNo. 155661, VA-35 Black Panthers, USS SARATOGA, Operation DESERT STORM (1991)

- A-6E BuNo. 152953, VA-35 Black Panthers, USS SARATOGA, Operation DESERT STORM (1991)

- A-6E BuNo. 161689, VMA(AW)-533 Hawks, Sheikh Isa Air Base, Bahrain, Operation DESERT STORM (1991)

- A-6E BuNo. 154158, VMA(AW)-533 Hawks, Sheikh Isa Air Base, Bahrain, Operation DESERT STORM (1991)

Cartograf printed the decals.  They are the best in the business, with their precision print quality, sharpness, vibrancy, and highly restrained printing of carrier film.  The airframe stencils are likewise excellent and cover everything on the airplane, such as the GRUA-7 ejection seats, special Mk. 20 bomb art and Mk. 82 bomb stencils, intake covers, helmets, and more.  The thorough instructions for airframe markings, technical notes (including flak curtains), loadout variations, and historical notes come in color on four double-sided pages.

AoA Decals keeps up to the high standard set by their first releases.  These are top-rate decals and should be an absolute pleasure to work with in representing the Intruders from the Grumman Ironworks who went to war over the skies of Libya, Iraq, and Kuwait.

Many thanks to AoA Decals for the review sample. You can find them on the web at http://www.aoadecals.com/ and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/AOAdecals
