DECAL SHEET REVIEW

AoA Decals # 32-004 Black Ponies & More Broncos:
USN/USMC OV-10A Broncos in the Vietnam War Era
1:32 Scale

vol_2_image

North American/Rockwell’s OV-10 Bronco was an important player in the close air support role from the Vietnam War to the Persian Gulf.  It was initially envisioned in the 1960s to fulfill the COIN (or counterinsurgency) role, but its utility as a FAC (forward air controller) and at many other jobs soon became clear. It was quite maneuverable, had a STOL capability allowing it to operate from unimproved airfields, could loiter for hours, direct fire, carry paratroopers and cargo, and conduct independent attacks.  Flown by the USAF, USN, and USMC, the Bronco fulfilled these various roles beginning in southeast Asia.  In Navy service, light-attack OV-10As supported SEALs, Marines, and river boats.  In this release, AoA Decals has released a 1:32 scale decal sheet set for these Vietnam era Navy Broncos.

This decal set is designed to fit the Kitty Hawk kit, the only 1:32 scale Bronco that’s out there.  The set consists of two sheets, one of which is AOA 32-005, which is the USN/USMC Green/Grey & Overall Grey OV-10A (and that product sold by itself contains two sets of complete stencils as opposed to the one included here).  In all, 21 different options are provided.  20 of these are Navy airplanes, with one Marine Bronco at the end:

Overall, the selection of these particular schemes are excellent choices.  They cover gray-over-green Broncos, overall gull grey Broncos, and one really neat looking black-over-grey airplane flown by VS-41 Shamrocks.  There’s no other way to say it: these are all really cool paint schemes for scale modelers.

Cartograf printed the decals.  They are the best in the business, with their precision print quality, sharpness, vibrancy, and highly restrained printing of carrier film.  The airframe stencils are likewise excellent and cover everything on the airplane including walkways, propeller tips, shark mouths on a few drop tanks, helmet markings, ejection seats, and so forth.  They appear to be as comprehensive as possible.  The instructions come on eight double-sided pages and one insert all printed sharply and in color.  Everything about this set of decals reflects the depth of research that appears to underscore each and every one of AoA’s decal sheets.

Scale modelers of all backgrounds and skill levels should find that these decals of Vietnam era Broncos will bring a great deal more variety and possibilities to their build of the Kitty Hawk OV-10A.

Many thanks to AoA Decals for the review sample. You can find them on the web at http://www.aoadecals.com/ and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/AOAdecals
