DECAL SHEET REVIEW

Antarki Model Decals #32001 MiG-29 9-13 S/SE/SMP/UBP, 1:32 Scale

vol_2_imageAntarki is a Peruvian aftermarket manufacturer that has recently come on the scene with an initial selection of decal sheets and aftermarket parts for modern MiG-29s in 1:72 and 1:48 scales. In their most recent release, they’ve produced a 1:32 scale decal sheet for Russian, Algerian, and Peruvian Fulcrums.

The MiG-29S (also known as Product 9-13 with the NATO reporting name Fulcrum-C) is an upgraded MiG-29 variant featuring improved flight control systems, avionics, and performance. Some 13 different Fulcrum-C variants have been produced for the Russian Air Force and various export customers.

Antarki 32001 contains two sheets covering full markings and airframe stencils for the following low-visibility grey and gray/green S/SE/SMP/UBP aircraft:

    1. MiG-29 S, Algerian AF, Bou Sefer AB, 1999
    2. MiG-29 UB, Algerian AF, Bou Sefer AB, 1999
    3. MiG-29 S, Russian AF, Kubinka AB, no date given
    4. MiG-29 SMP, Peruvian AF, Chiclayo AB, 2013-14
    5. MiG-29 UBP, Peruvian AF, Chiclayo AB, 2013-14
    6. MiG-29 S, Peruvian AF, Chiclayo AB, 1997
    7. MiG-29 SE, Peruvian AF, Chiclayo AB, 1998

These decals are characterized by an exquisite print quality. Colors are vibrant and the multicolor decals are in perfect register.  Also, the precision with which carrier film was laid down is notable: there is little to no excess of carrier film on these decals. Some of the most impressive points on this sheet are the little things – literally. The quality of airframe stencils and sharpness of text within stencils (easily readable in 1:32 scale) will add wonderful touches to anyone’s big MiG.

Two observations come to mind. First, the color instructions on the back of the front cover insert provide marking instructions for six of these MiG-29s in a left side view only. The rest of the marking instructions, including the seventh airplane, right side views, top and bottom views, and placement guides for the 250+ airframe stencils can be downloaded here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.925189084195719.1073741855.134774536570515&type=3

Second, for the moment – the closest one can come to the MiG-29 9-13 in 1:32 scale is the Trumpeter MiG-29M, but it’s a different variant entirely and lacks the distinctive spine avionics hump.  The best starting point would be converting Revell’s MiG-29A and UB kits to a Fulcrum C configuration using Zactomodel’s beautiful resin conversion kit that has the ‘fat back’ spine (http://www.zactomodels.com). Other details, such as the fixed external refueling probe on the SMP/UBP versions can be added with Quickboost’s resin parts (#Q32202).  However, if resin conversions are not your thing, just hang tight.  Currently listed in the Trumpeter catalog for 2016 releases are a new-tool 1:32 scale MiG-29 SMT, UB, and Fulcrum-C kits.  If you wait for Trumpeter, be aware that Antarki’s decal sheet is a limited release, so I might suggest getting this decal sheet while you can.

On a personal note – your reviewer is an archaeologist, and for the last 15 years, I’ve been working in the deserts of northern coastal of Peru. This part of the world has become my ‘second home.’ While excavating various archaeological sites, I’ve been fortunate to enjoy a good number of impromptu airshows (including high-speed low level passes and sonic booms now and then) courtesy of the Chiclayo-based MiG-29s of Air Group 6 and visiting Peruvian Air Force A-37s, Su 22s, Su 25s, and Mirages. For me, it’s great to see these Latin American (and Algerian and Russian) MiG-29s get their due with these very high-quality decal sheets.

Many thanks to Amaru Tincopa and Antarki Model Decals for the review sample. You can follow them on Facebook, and see their plans for new decals and kits at: https://www.facebook.com/Antarki-Model-Kits-Per%C3%BA-134774536570515/.  You can place orders at antarkimodels@gmail.com.
