DECAL SHEET REVIEW

Yellow-Wings Decals OS2U-1/2 Kingfishers
(VO-4, VS-2D1, NAS Sitka) 1:32 Scale

vol_2_image

One of the most important U.S. Navy airplanes of the Second World War never operated from an aircraft carrier, dropped torpedoes, or sank anything.  Instead, the catapult-launched OS2U Kingfisher was the Navy’s principal light scout aircraft during most of the war serving in reconnaissance, observation, and search-and-rescue duties.

The Kingfisher has long been a favorite among scale modelers, and in 2015, Kitty Hawk released a 1:32 scale plastic kit of the Kingfisher (see our review HERE.  While it’s not a perfect kit, it’s still very good as the definitive (and only) injection-molded OS2U in 1:32 scale.  The kit decals are good and offer a wide range of schemes, but they only scratch the surface of potential markings.

Yellow-Wings Decals begins to fill in some of these gaps with their series of decal sheets for the Kitty Hawk Kingfisher.  In this review, we take a look at the second of these: Yellow-Wings #32-020.  This decal set provides markings for three Kingfishers:

The decals come on three separate sheets, and they are quite comprehensive, covering everything from national insignias, to fuselage bands, wing chevrons, and stencils.  The three schemes here are really great, as they cover a really unique and interesting range subject matter.  The aluminum paint/yellow wing scheme seen on the VS-4 and NAS Sitka airplanes is most attractive, and the NAS Sitka scheme gets points from me for being really different.  The overall non-specular light grey scheme on the VS-2D1 airplane is also notable.  As of this writing, your reviewer is preparing to start work on the Kitty Hawk Kingfisher, and he’s seriously conflicted over which of these schemes to build…

The quality of the decal design is excellent, and the printing by Microscale is right up there with Cartograf and other leaders in the decal business.  Colors are vibrant, in perfect register, and carrier film is very thin and tightly restrained.  The instructions are excellent, gorgeously rendered, and printed in full color.

Many thanks to Wayne Tevlin of Yellow-Wings Decals for the review sample.  You can find Yellow-Wings Decals on the web at http://www.yellow-wingsdecals.com.  You can reach them by email at yellow-wingsdecals@att.net and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/wayne.tevlin.3
