DECAL REVIEW

Werner's Wings Decals #32-01
Vietnam Ace Capt. Steve Richie and Friends -- 1:32 Scale

The hard-fought air war over Vietnam witnessed the uncommon bravery and valor of tens of thousands of American airmen.  They faced many challenges – from restrictive rules of engagement to Soviet SAMs and their new weapon systems (such as air-to-air missiles) were still maturing and lacked reliability.  The extraordinary contributions of these combat aviators are incalculable, from aces such as Steve Richie and Chuck DeBellevue to the likes of Chappie James, Robin Olds, Dan Cherry, and Steve Bricker.

In this release sponsored by Glen Coleman and Joe Lortie of Kitty Hawk Models, Werner’s Wings provides decals for 14 Vietnam-era F-4 Phantom IIs (with several markings versions provided therein for a few of these jets), featuring Steve Ritchie and Chuck DeBellevue’s aircraft along with a host of their compatriots.  This set overlaps extensively with their 1:48 and 1:72 scale sets, but this time, the 1:32 scale sheet includes jets flown by the legendary COL Robin Olds.  The decals here are intended to fit perfectly on the 1:32 scale Tamiya F-4C/D Phantom II kit.  It contains the phollowing Phantoms:

The decal artwork was rendered by Mason Doupinik and printed by BOA.  The decal sheet itself is beautiful.  Colors look great and are opaque (particularly the solid white tail codes), and the great decal design and printing is really evident in the legibility of even the finest markings – and with some particularly subtle touches, too.  It might look like some of the white borders on the kill markings are off-center and the decals are out of register, but the research on these jets shows that’s exactly how they appeared on the real airplanes.

The markings guides are well-rendered, clear, and REALLY thorough to capture the airplane-by airplane variations of the USAF SEA camouflage patterns and other markings variations on these Phantoms.  Detailed notes on accurate loadouts and other subtle paint scheme variations for each scheme at each moment in time are provided, from the ordnance carried on each of Ritchie’s flights, to the mixed loadouts (including ECM pods) of Linebacker I and II sorties and the B-61 configuration fitted to the nuclear-strike mission of the Bentwaters-based F-4D.

The inclusion of the Robin Olds F-4s is a great addition here in the 1:32 scale issue of this sheet.  Olds scored his third and fourth MiG kills in 829 while commanding the 8th TFW.  Today, 829 is preserved at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.  If you’ve been there, you’ve probably seen Scat XXVIII up close.

This decal sheet is a must-have for F-4 Phantom fans and scale modelers of the Vietnam-era.  Its historical coverage is excellent and unprecedented.

Many thanks to Glen Coleman of Kitty Hawk and to Floyd Werner of Werner’s Wings for the review sample.  You can find Werner’s Wings on the web at http://www.wernerswings.com.  Their email is info@wernerswings.com and on Facebook, you can follow them at https://www.facebook.com/Werners-Wings.

Also – if you choose get this decal sheet, please let Floyd know you saw it here on Detail & Scale!! AND – the print run of this 1:32 scale sheet was limited to 200 copies.  The moral of that story: get your while you can!
