DECAL REVIEW

Werner's Wings Decals # 48-014
Ride of the Valkryies: The UH-1D/H in Vietnam
1:48 Scale

The American combat helicopter came of age, many would argue, in the form of the iconic Bell UH-1 Iroquois – better known as the Huey.  The design incorporated many of the lessons learned with rotary wing aircraft during the Korean War experience.  First flying in 1956, more than 16,000 UH-1s have been produced across some two-dozen variants and many still fly today.  Living in the Washington, DC area, I spot the UH-1Ns of the 1st Helicopter Squadron quite frequently.  But most importantly, the UH-1 was an integral player in the Vietnam War, where it gained legendary status for its utility, transport, and Medevac service.

In this release, Werner’s Wings provides decals for 14 UH-1Ds and UH-1Hs as they appeared during the Vietnam conflict.  These decals are optimized for the 1:48 scale Kitty Hawk kit, but they are generalized enough to be able to fit any other 1:48 scale Huey (e.g. Italieri, Esci/Erlt, Monogram kits). The set covers the following 13 markings options:

Further, the set includes stencils to cover one complete UH-1H or UH-1D.

Werner's Wings has a reputation for doing outstanding work, and these decals certainly hold up to the high expectation of this decal sheet.  One can really appreciate the very thorough research, careful decal design, and flawless, state-of-the-art printing.  The decal artwork was rendered by Mason Doupinik and was printed by Microscale.  The decal itself sheet is beautiful.  Colors look great and are opaque, and even some of the finest stencils (in both yellow and black) are legible.  Andrew Perrin contributed research on the RAAF Hueys, and Vietnam veterans Bo Roberts and John Brennan also assisted research for the sheet.  Their books on Vietnam-era nose art were one of sources of inspiration for this sheet.

The choices in schemes are also really great, from three celebrated MOH recipients to the all-white Medivac UH-1H, Australian Hueys, and great nose art on each of these options.  The markings guide is quite thorough and provides not just an overview of the UH-1D and –1H, but airframe-by-airframe configuration notes, including many of the small technical details and even the items that remained ambiguous following their extensive research on these helos.

Many thanks to Floyd Werner of Werner’s Wings for the review sample. You can find them on the web at http://www.wernerswings.com. Their email is info@wernerswings.com and on Facebook, you can follow them at https://www.facebook.com/Werners-Wings.
