DECAL SHEET REVIEW

Starfighter Decals # 700-100
USN NIMITZ Class CVN Markings
1:700/1:720 Scale

In 1975, the USS NIMITZ (CVN-68) was launched as the first of her class and represented a larger, more capable, and nuclear-powered projection of American air and sea power around the world. Named for World War II Pacific Fleet commander Adm. Chester W. Nimitz, the NIMITZ the other nine supercarriers in the class today represent a backbone of American deterrence and war fighting capability.  Following the retirement and decommissioning of the ENTERPRISE, the NIMITZ is now the oldest American carrier in service and is expected to sail on beyond 2025 until the planned Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CVN-79) is completed.  In this release, Starfighter Decals by Mark’s Models and Toys provides waterslide decals for all but one of the NIMITZ class carriers, covering island and flight deck markings.

These decals are designed to fit the Trumpeter/Pit Road 1:700 kits and can be adapted to the slightly smaller Italeri/Revell of Germany/Testors 1:720 kits.

Markings for the island are provided for the NIMITZ, EISENHOWER, VINSON, ROOSELVELT LINCOLN, WASHINGTON, STENNIS, TRUMAN, and REAGAN (CVN-68 thru CVN-76).  Unfortunately, markings are not provided for the final ship in the class, CVN-77, USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH).

Most of the decal sheet involves markings for the flight deck, and they are quite comprehensive in their coverage.  It seems just about everything is covered, from the runway markings to foul lines, the bow number, the free-flight white take-offline, and the warning markings that surround the jet blast deflectors, catapult officer hatches, electrical outlet hatches, and ordnance and aircraft elevators.  The additional decals touch on much finer details, such as UNREP markings, elevator locks, hangar deck markings, and the arresting barrier stanchion cover markings.  The research behind this sheet appears excellent, indeed, and any uncertainty (e.g., the enigmas behind UNREP markings placement) are explained and shared with the scale modeler so they can conduct further research or proceed with caution).

Printed by Cartograf of Italy, the decal quality is superlative.  Colors are gorgeous and perfectly in register.  This single sheet also replaces Starfighter’s previous ALPS-printed offerings that had a different sheet for the NIMITZ-class ships.  This is a major step up, and these markings are also superior to any kit provided-decals in terms of quality, coverage, and accuracy.  They also hands-down beat having to mask and airbrush any of these deck and island markings.  Overall, ship modelers and fans of naval aviation will find considerable value in these decals, saving significant time and effort while bringing a fine level of detail to the decks of the scale supercarrier.

Many thanks to Mark’s Models and Toys for the review sample. You can find on the web and purchase this sheet at http://www.starfighter-decals.com/index.html.
