DECAL SHEET REVIEW

Slylancer Decals
Republic F-84G Thunderjet Complete Stencil Data
1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

The F-84 Thunderjet was one of the most iconic and distinctive early U.S. jet fighters.  Early versions of the F-84 were plagued by multiple developmental challenges, including the temperamental and often underpowered nature of early jet engines.  The definitive production version was the F-84G, that by 1951 featured a new Allison J35 powerplant, improved avionics, and expanded air-to-ground capability that included certification of the F-84G as the first single seat fighter cleared to deliver a nuclear payload.

Skylancer Decals was an aftermarket decal manufacturer in the late 1990s and early 2000s when I first heard of them, and had a reputation for great decal quality and interesting subject matter.  Since then, the company seemingly went dark, but we ran into a resurgent Skylancer Decals at the 2016 IPMS/USA Nationals.  Indeed, Skylancer Decals is mounting a comeback, and is starting off by re-releasing some of their greatest hits.  Here, we’ll take a look at their airframe stencil data for the F-84 Thunderjet in 1:48 scale.

The decals are accurate for any early F-84B to the F-84G (including exported jets) and provide markings for the extensive stenciling on the fuselage upper and lower wings, wing tanks, pylons, and canopy.  The USAF and national insignia markings are universally adaptable to any F-84, and they include the early and late narrow and wide red stripe in the stars and bars (nice subtle touch!).  Canopy framing elements are also represented by decals, and appear to be the correct shade of ‘faded fiberglass” that characterized operational F-84s.

Print quality is exemplary in all respects.  Carrier film is thin and precisely applied right at the very edges of each decal.  In other words, these decals appear to be fantastic.  They are right up there with the quality of Microscale and Cartograf.  These decals are recommended for the Tamiya kit.  Skylancer put a great deal of work and care into this decal sheet, and it shows.  They are really putting the scale modeler first.

Many thanks to Donald Wood of Skylancer Decals for the review sample.
