DECAL SHEET REVIEW

Slylancer Decals
Republic F-84G Thunderjet Part 2 -- 1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

The F-84 Thunderjet was one of the most iconic and distinctive early U.S. jet fighters.  Early versions of the F-84 were plagued by multiple developmental challenges, including the temperamental and often underpowered nature of early jet engines.  The definitive production version was the F-84G, that by 1951 featured a new Allison J35 powerplant, improved avionics, and expanded air-to-ground capability that included certification of the F-84G as the first single seat fighter cleared to deliver a nuclear payload.

Skylancer Decals was an aftermarket decal manufacturer in the late 1990s and early 2000s when I first heard of them, and had a reputation for great decal quality and interesting subject matter.  Since then, the company seemingly went dark, but we ran into a resurgent Skylancer Decals at the 2016 IPMS/USA Nationals.  Indeed, Skylancer Decals is mounting a comeback, and is starting off by re-releasing some of their greatest hits.  Here, we’ll take a look one at of the entries in the “Cold Warrior Series- Strategic Fighters – SAC’s Terrier Fleet”:  Republic F-84G Thunderjet Part 2.

This decal set comes on two decal sheets, and covers one F-84E and one -G assigned to the Strategic Air Command as fighter escorts for SAC bombers.  In fact, SAC received the first F-84Gs off the production line.  On this sheet, decals are provided for:

These decals for both jets come on the primary decal sheet, and include airframe stencils as well as the stencils for the Mk. 7 tactical nuclear bomb and JATO bottles that the F-84G could be configured with.  Also, a complete set of national insignia, airframe stencils, and other data markings for one F-84 are provided on a second, smaller sheet.  Regarding both, overall print quality is exemplary in all respects.  Carrier film is thin and precisely applied right at the very edges of each decal.  In other words, these decals appear to be fantastic. They are right up there with the quality of Microscale and Cartograf.  These decals are recommended for the Tamiya kit.

Beyond being impressed with overall quality and detail of these decals, the markings guide is among the most thorough you will ever encounter.  I learned quite a few new things about the F-84 in going through the multiple pages of reference material accompanying the decals that explain differences between F-84 variants, product and aftermarket references for the scale modeler, building notes, and more.  Skylancer put a great deal of work and care into this decal sheet, and it shows.  They are really putting the scale modeler first.

Many thanks to Donald Wood of Skylancer Decals for the review sample.
