DECAL SHEET REVIEW

Furball Aero-Design F-35 Anthology Joint Strike Fighters Part III -- 1:48 Scale

The F-35 will likely always carry mostly low-visibility gray colors for its service lifetime.  Not only are the colors optimized to help the jet be harder to see, both in the visual and infrared spectra, but there are currently not a lot of other shades of paint available formulated using its special low observable-characteristics.  To date, squadron markings, national insignia, and stencils have revolved around a lighter grey color sitting around the FS 36320 side of the gray spectrum.  Yet, as time has gone on and as the F-35 continues to mature, a little color is starting to appear on some F-35s.

This new sheet from Furball Aero-Design captures a good deal this development on the F-35B fleet.  The sheet features seven USMC F-35Bs as they appeared between 2016 and 2018 along with one of the newest F-35Bs operated by the Italian Navy.  Stenciling and data markings are provided to build two complete models.  The sheet features the following aircraft:

The decals are provided on a single sheet.  First, decals for scale models don’t really get any better than this.  The quality of the decal design by Furball and the printing by Cartograf is a perfect combination.  In particular, the printing (including the incredibly restrained and thin carrier film) by Cartograf is impeccable.  Beyond that, the schemes here are just plain “cool,” from the rising sun tail art on the VMFA-121 jet, to the three-color USMC emblem on the tail of the VMFA-122 CO’s jet, the red and white stripes on the VMFA-221 CO’s aircraft, and the blue and white markings on the VMFAT-501 F-35B.  It’s the attention to little details that impresses me just equally, including the fidelity of the airframe stencil hoist point markings, the various and correct styles of “No Step”, crew names, and other airframe markings – including the gorgeous and big American flag on the inside of the upper lift fan duct door on the VMFA-122 CO’s airplane.  The high standard of research really shines through on the accuracy of these decals.  These decals are sized for the 1:48 scale Kitty Hawk F-35B, which is still the only 1:48 scale STOVL variant of the Lighting II.

I can offer no substantive critiques of this decal set.

Overall, Furball Aero-Design does another consistently great job with this offering and it will allow scale modelers build some very sharp looking F-35Bs.
