DECAL SHEET REVIEW

Furball Aero-Design Man-Eater SLUFs -- 1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

The A-7 Corsair II was one of the most venerable mainstay ground attack aircraft flown by both the U. S. Air Force and U. S. Navy from the 1960s to early 1990s.  Of course, the SLUF (you can look that one up if you don’t know its meaning) had a huge single intake at the front of the nose that took no imagination to see as a big mouth under the nose on the jet.  Further, if ground personnel were not paying attention to where they were walking around the A-7, the last thing anyone would see of that casually minded person would be their feet going down the air inlet.  Some rather well known “shark mouth” schemes appeared on the A-7 over the years.

In this reprint of a long out-of-print and in-demand set, Furball once again brings us decals for eight different 1:48 scale USAF A-7Ds in the SEA paint scheme between 1972 and 1981.  Also included are stencils and data decals for two complete jets.

As is anticipated, these decals are typical Furball – they are top-notch.  The quality of both the decal design/artwork by Furball and the printing by Cartograf is equally superlative.  It doesn't get any better than this.

The decals are optimized for the 1:48 scale Hasegawa A-7D kits, but should work pretty well on the Hobbyboss A-7D as well.  Choices in schemes are unique and interesting to represent among some of the most poignant A-7Ds of this era.  There are different “shark mouth” options as well as the grinning “molar mouth” scheme worn by 71-0354 for a short time at Korat in 1973.  There various useful notes on the airframes.  I am also a big fan of the airframe stencils in this set.  They are just beautifully done.

Furball Aero-Design does another great job with re-issuing this decal set and it will allow scale modelers to build some very distinctive USAF A-7Ds.  The high standard of research also shines through on the accuracy of these decals.

Many thanks to Furball Aero-Design for the review sample.  You can find them on the web at http://www.furballaero-design.com/default.asp and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/FurballAeroDesign
