DECAL SHEET REVIEW

Flying Leathernecks Decals Hornets Swarm: US Marine Corps F/A-18A/C/D Hornets in Combat -- 1:48 Scale

Flying Leathernecks Decals is an aftermarket decal manufacture who specializes in U. S. Marine Corps subject matter.  Here, we take a look at one of their latest 1:48 scale releases, Hornets Swarm

The Legacy Hornet has represented one of the Marine Corps’ most valuable air assets for more than 30 years where it has served as nothing less than a combat workhorse.  While the Navy retired its final F/A-18C in early 2019, the USMC has focused on extending the life and increasing the lethality of the venerable Legacy Hornet to the point that the Marines will fly significantly upgraded F/A-18Cs at least until the late 2020s.  This sheet provides markings for 10 USMC Hornets as they appeared between 1997 to 2015, from Operation DELIBERATE GUARD to INHERENT RESOLVE:

The decals were designed by Flying Leatherneck Decals and printed in the USA by Microscale.  The print quality is exemplary and carrier film is precisely applied right at the very edges of each marking.  They really appear on par with Cartograf and the carrier film appears to perfectly thin.  The markings guide is filled with technical, painting, and historical notes for each Hornet.  A lot of these details are subtle, but they are indeed all noted here.  An extremely valuable loadout guide is also provided to make sure the builder gets the right external stores and weapons matched up with these particular schemes and time periods.

These decals are sized for the Kinetic F/A-18 that is the best 1:48 scale Hornet out there.  Most of these markings are generalized enough to be used on any 1:48 scale Hornet.  However, an addendum sheet is also included with tail markings for VMFA-232 to fit the slightly different contours of the Hasegawa kit’s vertical stabilizers along with the remaining MARINES markings, intake warning chevrons, national insignia, and other stencils.  Also, there are enough intake warning chevrons, national insignia, exhaust and cockpit warning placards to build all 10 options(!).  Not many decal manufacturers are so thorough, thoughtful, or complete.

In sum, Flying Leathernecks has another high-quality hit on their hands.  Hornets Swarm is excellent in all regards and will be especially valuable for Hornet fans and folks interested in USMC subject matter and modern combat aircraft more broadly.  Many thanks to Dave Beltran-Roof of Flying Leatherneck Decals for the review sample.  You can find them on the web at http://flyingleathernecksdecals.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Flying-Leathernecks-Decals-137660979588449.  The sheet can be ordered straight from their website or at Sprue Brothers (http://spruebrothers.com).
