DECAL SHEET REVIEW

F-4Dable Models Midway Phantoms 2: F-4S Phantom IIs of VF-151 Vigilanties (Pt. 2) -- 1:48 Scale

In this review, we are pleased to bring you the first of a series of product reviews from F-4Dable Models, an aftermarket decal manufacturer based in Malaysia.

In March 1986, history was made when the last F-4S Phantom II was launched off the deck of the USS MIDWAY.  It was the very twilight of the Phantom’s esteemed naval career and the final cat shot of the F-4 in U. S. Navy service.  By this time, the colorful paint schemes of the 1960s and 1970s were in the history books, and these jets were painted in the low-visibility TPS paint schemes.  While VF-161 Rock Rivers was scheduled to make the last cat shot, the distinction actually went to “Switchbox 210” – a member of their sister squadron, VF-151 Vigilantes.

In this release by F-4Dable Models, the scale modeler gets three of the last VF-151 F-4S jets, including markings for the jet that took that phinal and phamous cat shot.

These decals are an excellent combination of very well executed design work and top-flight printing by Cartograf.  It doesn't get any better than this.  Printing is very clear, colors look great, and carrier film is exceptionally thin and restrained.

The decals tell the story of the last days of U. S. Navy F-4S operations at sea, and it’s one most certainly worth telling.  The decals are optimized for both the 1:48 scale Hasegawa and Zoukei-mura F-4S kits.  This set contains three sets of tail markings, as each one of these sets of markings were slightly different on each of the 1:1 scale aircraft.  These decals capture those subtle variations.  There are also three sets of maintenance stencils (which were quite limited in number on the TPS schemes) and low-voltage strip formation lights.  Many decal sheets have the so-called “slime lights” a bright yellow, but these are very nicely done as a soft, off-light yellow.  There’s also a small correction to make on the intake warning markings and pair of small correction inserts for the Battle E/Safety S markings.  Don’t use the solid black ones on the main decal sheet.

The markings guide features great aircraft profiles.  There’s also a lot of information about these three particular jets, which reflects the depth of research behind these decals.  Another genuine highlight is a great written narrative about the last cat shot by the pilot of Switchbox 210 himself (Switchbox was VF-151’s radio callsign) involving how and why it was the Vigilantes that had the honor of flying off the last F-4S from a carrier…given the fact that VF-161 was “supposed” to usher the last Phantom II to its final carrier launch.

Overall, F-4Dable Models has done a great job with this decal set and it will allow scale modelers to build a trio of very historic F-4S Phantom IIs.  The high standard of research also shines through on the accuracy of these decals.  This sheet also comes in 1:72 scale, and we’ll have that review to you soon.

Many thanks to F-4Dable Models and Jason Cheah for the review sample.  You can find them on the web at https://f-4dablemodels.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/f4dablemodels/.  And if you’re ever in the neighborhood, they also have a brick-and-mortar hobby shop, too, in Jaya One, on Jalan Universiti, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.
