Hypersonic Models EA-6B Prowler Exhaust Set
1:48 Scale

The Grumman EA-6B Prowler was the Navy’s electronic warfare and SEAD platform for decades, and the final operational Prowlers are currently being flown by U.S. Marine Corps aviators for a just a little while longer.  There have been a number of Prowler kits released over the years, and the Revell 1:48 scale EA-6B – while replete with a range of errors – was still the best 1:48 scale Prowler around since the early 1990s until six years ago.  In 2011, Kinetic’s 1:48 scale EA-6B (also reboxed under the Italeri label) took that title from the Revell kit, and it was a vastly better Prowler. Yet, both of these kits suffer from inaccurate exhausts.

The back end of the Pratt & Whitney J52 engines connects to a “lazy S”-shaped exhaust tube.  The Revell kit is grossly inaccurate in representing the exhausts.  While the Kinetic kit parts have the right idea in terms of shape, details are simplified, missing, or generally inaccurate.

Hypersonic Models provides a cast resin and photoetch metal set to replace the Kinetic kit’s exhaust parts.  The set is simple yet very effective.  Each segment of the exhaust pipe corresponds to an angled joint that is present in the 1:1 scale EA-6B exhaust.  It’s a brilliant engineering job.  Each segment fits very precisely with its adjacent part.  Casting is clean, smooth, and free on any perceptible defects.  The photoetch metal parts representing the rear-most turbine structure are really outstanding but also quite fine and delicate.  Use care when handling.  Even in the bag, two of the flame holders on one of the PE rings were bent.  It’s nothing a little re-bending can’t fix, so no worries.

Some cutting and sanding will be necessary to get these parts to fit, but the instructions very clearly highlight these areas.  Also, do note that this is not a true “drop-in” type resin replacement.  In order to get these resin pipes into the model, one will have to a little cutting; of course, if one buys a resin set, you probably own a few razor saws and cutting plastic is not an unusual activity!  Also, you’ll deviate a little from the kit instructions to make sure the completed exhausts are incorporated into the model before the fuselage halves are joined.  Test fit, of course!

The three pages of color instructions are very well printed, very well written, and clearly illustrated, including a really valuable reference photo of the real thing.  Hypersonic does great instructions.

Overall, this appears to be a high-quality aftermarket offering to improve the accuracy of the 1:48 scale Kinetic/Italeri EA-6B in 1:48 scale.  It’s neat and will make a difference in your Prowler.  It is also within the realm of possibility that the scale modeler could work these parts into the Revell EA-6B, but just exactly how much modification would be required to those ends is up to the modeler to evaluate. I’d love to try and test fit them into the Revell kit, but I sold all my old Monogram Prowlers some time ago.

Many thanks to Hypersonic Models for the review sample. You can find them on the web and purchase this set at http://www.hypersonicmodels.co.uk.
