AFTERMARKET REVIEW

Werner's Wings Resin Detail Sets
for the UH-1 Iroquois -- 1:48 Scale

In this set of releases, Werner’s Wings provides three resin sets that add extra detail or that fix mistakes in the Kitty Hawk 1:48 scale UH-1D kit.  While Werner’s Wings was involved in the development of the Kitty Hawk Huey since the beginning, there were elements of the kit they wanted to do better, or for varying reasons, did not make it onto the kit.  These sets are designed to partially remedy the situation (set 48-15, the primary UH-1D correction set, is still under development).  Further, these detail sets can also be used on any 1:48 scale UH-1 (not just the Kitty Hawk UH-1D kit).

The first of these sets is 48-13, ARC-102 early-style high frequency antenna mounts for the UH-1D but also can be used on any UH-1 configured with these antennas.  This set features ten of the mounts and two lead-ins.  These parts are VERY finely cast and delicate.  EZ-Line filament is also provided to simulate the antennas themselves.

The second set is 48-14, the Anti-Strella set for the UH-1D.  When the NVA started using the SA-7 Strella missile, UH-1s were modified with several features to defeat this shoulder-fired weapon.  These included engine heat shields, the “toilet bowl” engine exhaust shroud, and an oil cooler exhaust heat shield.  This set features parts for all of these modifications that can be added very easily and placed directly on the model – no other work is needed to add these parts to your build.

The third set examined here is 48-16, UH-1H Upgrade.  As tactics evolved, greater emphasis was placed on low-level flying.  Related post-Vietnam upgrades featured fitting the Huey with the APR-39 radar, an Improved Particle Separator (IPS) engine intake air filter, and the Wire Strike Protection System (WSPS).  This set features the two APR-39 radar mounts, a great looking IPS, and the very fine WSPS cable cutters.

These resin parts are printed on a CAD printer with multiple fine “printing gates” leading up to each piece.  It’s a nice alternative to standard resin casting, as it eliminates the big casting blocks and reduces cleanup time by an order of magnitude.  Further, the quality of all of these pieces appears to be just flawless, and serious tip-of-the-hat goes to Pete Hamann and Ray Wilhite for their design work on these parts.  For fans of the UH-1 and those interested in adding important and interesting/pertinent details that are absent in whatever plastic kit you’re building, you simply cannot go wrong with these sets.

Many thanks to Floyd Werner of Werner’s Wings for the review sample.  You can find them on the web at http://www.wernerswings.com. Their email is info@wernerswings.com and on Facebook, you can follow them at https://www.facebook.com/Werners-Wings.

Also – if you choose get any of these detail sets, please let Floyd know you saw it here on Detail & Scale!!
