Zoukei-mura F-4J/S Phantom II Photo-Etch Set
SWS48-04-M03 1:48 Scale

The Zoukei-mura F-4J and F-4S kits really do have the most details in their cockpits for any injection-molded 1:48 scale Phantom II. In our previous reviews that you can read HERE (http://detailandscale.com/scale model review zoukei-mura super wings series no. 4 f-4j phantom ii 1.48 scale.html) and HERE (http://detailandscale.com/scale model review zoukei-mura super wings series no. 4 f-4s phantom ii 1.48 scale.html), one can see that Zoukei-mura put a great deal of effort into their kit but it shows especially in the front office.

Of course, one can always add more detail and Zoukei-mura has now released a photoetched metal detail set for the F-4J and F-4S cockpits. This set contains 46 PE parts on one mostly pre-painted photo etch metal fret and two turned brass pitot tubes. The PE parts were manufactured for Zoukei-mura by Eduard, and the pitot tubes are by Master Models.

In this detail set it is clear that Eduard accurately captured the differences between the F-4J and S cockpits, particularly in regarding the distinctions in placement of the radar scope display. In my above review of the F-4S, I did catch what I think was probably a small accuracy error in the F-4S kit's missile control and comms panels. They looked identical to the J. Here, the subtle panel differences are correct and this set rectifies the error beyond a shadow of a doubt. Other small details include the rear-view mirrors, interior canopy framing, and many other small details. The turned brass pitot tubes by Master Models are also of a rather high quality and they are to replace the kit's air data sensors that project from the leading edge of the vertical stabilizer.

Overall, this detail set looks great and I will certainly be using it when I build my F-4J and F-4S. The brass pitot tubes are also a nice feature and are a slight upgrade over the kit parts. I always cringe a little with the semi-gloss finish on the instrument and console panels, but is is an unavoidable byproduct of Eduard's manufacturing process. They're too shiny for instrument panels and too dull for instrument faces. Hit the panels and consoles with your favorite flat coat to bring them to a dead flat and then paint or airbrush the dial faces with a few coats of Future floor wax or your equivilent therein.

Pre-painted face curtain ejection handles would have been nice to include here, but they did not make the cut, it would seem. The Zoukei-mura cockpit set is missing the VTAS infrared sensors mounted to the inside of the pilot's canopy, so perhaps in the near future, someone will come out with a small correction set for that, too. These sensors certainly can be done as foldable PE parts, but probably be more amenable to a resin solution.

My sincere thanks are owed to Mr. Hideyuki Shigeta, the president of Zoukei-mura and Carmine Napolitano (also of Zoukei-mura) for providing this sample. You can find out more about them at http://www.zoukeimura.co.jp/en and follow Mr. Shigeta's blog at http://www.zoukeimura.com.co.jp/en/sentiment/oyajiblog 093.html, which is a good way to follow development of their kits and their other activities.
