AFTERMARKET REVIEW

Zoukei-mura F-4C/D/J/S Phantom II Metal Struts Set
1:48 Scale

The Zoukei-mura F-4J and F-4S kits represent state-of-the-art plastic injection molding technology and are very well detailed. In this small white metal upgrade set, Zoukei-mura offers a set of cast metal landing gear for their F-4J and F-4S. This set contains 10 metal parts: the main nose gear, the nose gear scissors, hydraulic steering cylinder, the main nose gear retraction linkage, left and right main gear, and the left and right main gear retraction struts.

These parts appear to have been cast from masters consisting of the kit parts. I think a few small injection pin markings can be seen on a few of the pieces, and sure enough, a quick look at the kit parts show a match with ejection pin mark locations. So, the detail is the same as the kit, but the advantage here is the long-term weight bearing properties of the white metal. These will never bend or sag unlike what plastic parts can do over the years in a display cabinet. Some parts cleanup will be necessary to remove the remnants of the pour gates, mould seam lines, and injection pin marks. Further, it's a good idea to smooth out the parts in general. A small hand held polishing wheel in a rotary tool will do the trick, and they will look appropriately smooth when the white paint goes on. Also, we recently learned that Zoukei-mura is also planning an F-4C and F-4D, and these parts will be appropriate for those Phantom kits, too.

My sincere thanks to Hideyuki Shigeta, the president of Zoukei-mura and Carmine Napolitano (also of Zoukei-mura) for providing this sample. You can find out more about them at: https://www.zoukeimura.co.jp.en/ and follow Mr. Shigeta's blog at: https://www.zoukeimura.co.jp.en/sentiment/oyajiblog 093.html, which is a good way to follow development of their kits and other activities.
