AFTERMARKET REVIEW

Barracuda Cast BR 48239
B-1B External Detail Upgrade Set 1:48 Scale

If your goal as a modeler involves building a modern 1:48 B-1B, you would have had some significant construction challenges – until recently.  In Summer 2015, BarracudaCast released a series of aftermarket resin upgrade sets for the B-1B.  Here, we’ll first take a look at Barracuda’s B-1B external upgrade set.The B-1B Lancer, nicknamed “the BOne,” remains a mainstay of U.S. airpower – despite the end of its original strategic deterrence mission at the close of the Cold War.  The B-1B has been subsequently evolved in its range of missions, hardware, and tactics. The BOne has excelled in roles such as close air support that its designers never originally intended. Another B-1 mainstay is the classic Revell 1:48 injection molded B-1B. It’s one of the largest plastic kits ever put into production. The initial boxing of this model appeared right about when the first B-1B rolled off the production line at Plant 42 in Palmdale. It’s still a respectable model, and since 1999, it has been periodically re-popped from the same molds. Most recently, Revell of Germany reissued the kit in September 2015.

Revell’s model represents what an early production B-1B was supposed to look like. In other words, the model does a decent job in capturing the shape, size, and proportions of the early B-1B, but various simplified details and inaccuracies exist, from the arrangement of the intakes, gear wells, weapons bays, and location of various panel lines. Also, the BOne’s external configurations have changed since then as new capabilities have been progressively integrated into the airframe.

This set includes nine finely cast resin parts. These include the early and late antennas for the AN/ALQ-16 Defensive Avionics System (DAS) and the AN/ALE-50 towed decoy launchers. Four other four other antennas on the bottom of the jet are also provided.

The resin blade antennas accurately capture their lenticular cross-sectional shape and proportions – they are not simply thin, narrow rectangles that you can cut out of stock styrene.  Another highlight of this update set is the inclusion of the two well done ALE-50 “little buddy” launchers.  Do note that the ALE-50s are ‘sided.’  The “P” and “S” on the back of the dispensers are for ‘port’ and ‘starboard,’ so pay attention when you place them on your model.

You can download the instructions for this set here: http://barracudacals.com/images/instructions/BR48239_instructions_1.pdf

I’ve done lots of B-1B reference photography over the last five years, and Barracuda’s parts are very accurate. The only point of note: modelers should do their research regarding what era their B-1B is to represent.  These various antenna upgrades appeared at various times in the B-1B’s lifetime – such as how the ALE-50s and large ventral planar DAS antenna only appeared on the airframe following the Block D upgrades in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

In conclusion, this upgrade set has been long needed to improve and update Revell’s venerable B-1B. BarracudaCast’s product really fills in a gap.  Many thanks are owed to Roy Sutherland and the crew at Barracuda for the development of this set.  Highly recommended!
