Model Monkey Oxygen Bottles for B-17, B-24, B-25, B-26, A-20, PBY, etc. -- 1:32 Scale

vol_2_image

If you’ve ever seen interior photos or been inside some of the larger WWII or Korean-era combat aircraft, you’ll have likely noticed big, yellow cylinders here and there.  These are low-pressure bottles filled with breathing oxygen for the crew.  And if you have just about any 1:48 scale model of any of those airplanes (such as the classic Monogram or Revell B-17s and many, many others), these bottles are nowhere to be found on the sprues.  The Model Monkey product description lists 50 kits in which this set can be used.

3-D parts manufacturer Model Monkey comes to the rescue with their 1:48 scale Oxygen Bottle set.  It contains parts for four bottles.  Each is divided into left and right halves.  When the parts are removed from their runners, you will notice there’s a recessed lip on one of them so the two halves will join up seamlessly.  Surface details look great.  These parts are also very reasonably priced for the high quality that they represent.

Beyond this, two things really stand out: first, being somewhat familiar with the process and effort involved in the 3-D parts design, I would say that the underlying design work is outstanding: precise, clean, and accurate.  But of course, 3-D models on a computer must be translated into a part, and those parts sometimes are only as good as their printers which brings me to my second point: the printing here is flawless.  3-D resin manufacturing processes “print” parts by building up very thin layers of plastic or resin atop a previous layer.  Here, the layering is extremely fine.  It’s still visible, but you have to squint to see the printed layers.

Model Monkey’s 1:48 scale Oxygen Bottle set gets two very enthusiastic thumbs up.  We extend our sincere thanks to Steve Larsen at Model Monkey for the review sample.  You can visit them on the web and order their products directly at https://www.model-monkey.com
