Model Monkey TR.9D Radio Transceiver for Spitfire, Hurricane, Mosquito, Beaufighter, etc. -- 1:32 Scale

vol_2_image

During WWII, the TR.9D radio used by many types of RAF and Commonwealth aircraft including the Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane, Bristol Beaufighter, and deHavilland Mosquito.  It was designed primarily for single-seat fighters and was intended to provide two-way communication to a range of 35 miles when transmitting to the ground and five miles range to other aircraft.  Frequency coverage was 4300-6000 kc/s and the power supply was drawn from a pair of internal batteries.  In single-seat fighters, the TR.9D set was installed behind the pilot.

Model Monkey produces a single-piece, 3-D printed, and super-detailed TR.9D radio set for use in any 1:32 scale kit of the Spitfire, Hurricane, Beaufighter, or Mosquito.  Its surface details are fantastic and highly accurate.  It was patterned using materials provided by the Imperial War Museum in the UK.  There’s a lot of detail here for the detail painters out there.

Beyond this, two things really stand out: first, being somewhat familiar with the process and effort involved in 3-D parts design, the underlying design work is outstanding: precise, clean, and accurate.  Still, 3-D models on a computer must be translated into a part, and those parts sometimes are only as good as their printers which brings me to my second point: the printing here is flawless.  3-D resin manufacturing processes “print” parts by building up very thin layers of plastic or resin atop a previous layer.  Here, the layering is extremely fine.  It’s still visible, but you have to squint to see the printed layers.

Model Monkey’s 1:32 scale TR.9D Radio Transceiver set gets two very enthusiastic thumbs up.  It is also very well priced for the value, too.  We extend our sincere thanks to Steve Larsen at Model Monkey for the review sample.  You can visit them on the web and order their products directly at https://www.model-monkey.com
