Metallic Details Su-27 Detail Set -- 1:72 Scale

The Su-27 Flanker was the Soviet Union’s answer to the “high” element of a “high-low” fighter concept developed in the late 1960s that was in many ways a direct response to the development of the F-15 Eagle.  Today, the formidable Flanker remains Russia’s premier air superiority platform.  There have been a lot of kits of this heavy fighter/interceptor issued over the years, and some are really quite outstanding.  Of course, the smaller in scale one goes, often, detail becomes simplified or otherwise sacrificed.

Here, Metallic Details offers photoetched metal detail parts that can greatly enhance the Zvezda 1:72 scale injection-molded Su-27 kit. They are an aftermarket detail manufacturer from Ukraine specializing in photoetched metal and resin detail parts.

Metallic Details provides quite a comprehensive and extensive set of details for the Zvezda Su-27.  The metal is thin, properly malleable, and the tiny connections of parts to the fret make removal a breeze.  The set provides parts for nearly an entirely new cockpit (HUD frame, instrument panel [with photofilm instrument dial faces], side consoles, rudder pedals), rear-view mirrors, and really nice shoulder harnesses, lap belts, and ejection handle for the K-36 ejection seat.  The fine intake grills and louvers are beautifully done as photoetched parts, including a very nice representation of the ultra-fine perforations in the grills and surface details of the louvers – especially in this scale.

Other parts are designed to enhance the nose gear shroud and to represent the walls of the main gear wells.  There are also photoetched parts to represent the gun gas purge vents, exhaust nozzle caps of the R-27 and R-73 air-to-air missiles, airframe static wicks, and a few antennas.  Perhaps most impressive is the near-complete photoetched metal replacement for the afterburner nozzles.  It’s a multi-part construction that features both inside and outside of nozzle surfaces and has surface detail and subtlety far beyond what the kit achieves.

Overall, this looks like a great set to add quite a bit of detail and enhanced quality to your build of the Zvezda 1:72 scale Su-27.  It’s also very well priced, too.

Many thanks to Metallic Details for the review sample.  You can find them online, see the rest of their product line, and order their products at http://www.metdetails.com/. They’re also on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/metdetails/
