AFTERMARKET REVIEW

Metallic Details SR-71 Grids and Jet Nozzles
1:48 Scale

The SR-71 and its relatives (the A-12 and YF-12A) are among the most exotic modern aircraft ever constructed.  All of it related to the Blackbird’s unique mission that brought it higher than 85,000 feet and at speeds in excess of Mach 3.  The mighty J58 ramjet engines powered the airplane.  To ensure that the proper volume and speed of air could get to the engines, the Air Inlet Control System (AICS) featured a large variable geometry air inlet spike.  This spike worked in concert with bleed air doors that would vent overboard excess air.  These doors automatically cycled open and closed in varying combinations at various airspeeds.  Exterior surfaces of the AICS vents were mesh grills located on the sides and lower surfaces of the engine nacelles.  At the back end of the engine nacelle were the engine nozzles that each channeled some 26,000 pounds of thrust when the J58 was at full power.

The classic Testor’s 1:48 scale SR-71 Blackbird has the grills in the right places, but they could be more accurate and consistent in their surface details.  Also, scale modelers have long critiqued the engine nozzles as oversimplified and overly thick for 1:48 scale.  Cutting Edge did a good cast resin engine nozzle set, but those are only occasionally seen on eBay and are rather expensive due to their very high demand.

The Metallic Details SR-71 Grids and Jet Nozzles contains 43 photoetched metal parts on two well-sized frets.  As usual, the quality of the photoetch parts fabrication is outstanding, and it really has to be for a set such as this.  All the nacelle vent grills are represented here in a lot higher fidelity than what the kit provides.  Also, a set of nose gear well doors are provided as well as some other miscellaneous details on the underside of the chine.  The engine nozzles are all photoetched:  two big PE parts per nozzle featuring a single-piece inner and an outer surface.  The outer section is to slip over the inner ring.  Shaping these to the proper diameter should not be too hard, but be careful and take your time.  Also included are a pair of afterburner flame holders that look really great.

Once again, Metallic Details has provided another great, useful, and accurate Blackbird detail set.  It will add some very notable and important exterior details to the 1:48 scale Testors Blackbird kit.

Many thanks are owed to Metallic Details for the review sample.  You can find them online and order their products at http://www.metdetails.com/ and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/metdetails/
