Hypersonic Models F-4 Phantom Fuselage Correction Set
1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

The Zoukei-mura family of 1:48 scale F-4 Phantom IIs (currently including the F-4C, D, J, and S) really do represent the best F-4s in this scale.  They are rich with detail, feature really great engineering, and fit with a high degree of precision.  Yet, it can be argued that the back end of the Zoukei-mura F-4 is a little off.  Critics have noted that the sides of the rear fuselage are a little flat and lack the proper degree of curvature that accommodated the J79 engines.  It’s a subtle shape issue, but if you look at it carefully, the difference between the kit fuselage and the real aircraft can be discerned.

Since we last checked in with Hypersonic Models, a lot has been going on there.  Aside from moving their operation from Great Britain to Japan (and your orders now ship directly from Japan), they’ve been producing new detail sets and there’s even a 1:48 scale new-tool SR-71 Blackbird on their production docket…

Back to the Zoukei-mura F-4.  If the rear fuselage contour issue bothers you enough, Hypersonic Models has now come to the rescue.  Their F-4 Phantom Fuselage Correction Set comes with two cast resin parts that can be used in lieu of the kit’s aft fuselage.  Use of this set requires some significant surgery.  Using a razor saw, you will have to cut out the rear mid-section of the left and right kit fuselage parts from between the back end of the main gear well to just forward of the forward base of the vertical stabilizer.  A set of VERY useful pre-cut self-adhesive vinyl strips align with the cut lines (which follow the panel lines of the kit) to precisely guide one’s razor saw.

The cast resin parts look great.  The masters are very precise, the cast resin parts are are perfectly cast, and the thickness of the panel lines and size of the rivets match that of the kit.  Sometimes, size mismatches can be a problem with aftermarket parts, but not here.

Overall, this set is THE solution to the shape issue in the back end of the 1:48 scale Zoukei-mura Phantoms.  Some scale modelers won’t mind the shape error in the kit, but for the builder seeking the most accurate F-4 they can build, this set will save you a lot of work.  It is also reasonably priced.  Of course, this is not a drop-in replacement set.  There’s some significant (but not terribly difficult!) surgery required to integrate these two correction parts to the base kit, so just take the proper steps in planning and preparation to make sure you get it all right.  As noted, cutting of the fuselage is required, as well as some sanding of the remaining kit plastic and then blending of the resin correction parts.

Many thanks are owed to Hypersonic Models for the review sample.  You can find them on the web and purchase this set at http://www.hypersonicmodels.com.  On Facebook, follow their latest news and see upcoming releases at https://www.facebook.com/hypersonicmodels/
