Hypersonic Models F-4 Phantom Canopy Details Set
1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

The F-4 Phantom IIs has long been at or near the top of “favorite” lists of many scale modelers.  Today, there are several excellent F-4s to choose from in 1:48 scale, from the older Hasegawa family of kits to Academy’s more recent offerings and most recently, a growing family of 1:48 scale F-4s from Zoukei-mura.  One area where all those kits could use a little more detail involves the insides of their canopies.

This trio of detail sets (#48016-1, 48016-2, and 48016-3) released by Hypersonic Models attends to a lack of canopy details in the Hasegawa, Academy, and Zoukei-mura kits, respectively.  Each set contains the same parts but tooled a just a little differently for the slight size, proportion, and shape differences between them.   In fact there are parts here for the F-4B/N, F-4J/S, F-4C/D, F-4E/EJ, F-4F, and FG.1/FRG.2.  It is impressively thorough!

Each set is tooled a little bit differently for the Hasegawa, Academy, and Zoukei-Mura kits.  Each contains 22 cast resin parts and 17 photoetched metal parts on a single fret.  The resin parts provide the fore- and aft canopy frame and canopy deck, the canopy actuators, and various, variant-specific instruments mounted in different configurations to the windscreen and mid-canopy arch such as compasses and other gear.  Fine metal wire is provided for various wires and cables as described in the instructions.  There are also cast resin parts to represent the VTAS helmet-mounted queuing system sensors installed in the F-4S and Late F-4J/N which are missing in all of the kits.  The photoetched metal parts are used for the fore- and aft edge surfaces of the windscreen and canopies and include details such as the canopy seal gaskets and really nicely executed rear-review mirrors.  Other PE parts faithfully replicate the inside of the canopy rails and canopy locking hooks.

The cast resin and PE parts look great.  The parts design is very precise and accurate, everything is perfectly manufactured.  Just note there’s a little surgery required to integrate these aft canopy parts to each base kit, so take the proper steps in planning and preparation to make sure you get it all right.  A pre-cut self-adhesive vinyl strip set is included to be used as a VERY useful precision cutting guide.

Many thanks are owed to Hypersonic Models for the review sample.  You can find them on the web and purchase this set at http://www.hypersonicmodels.com.  On Facebook, follow their latest news and see upcoming releases at https://www.facebook.com/hypersonicmodels/
