AFTERMARKET REVIEW

Furball Aero-Design FMS-024
F-14 Spoiler and Flap Mask Set -- 1:48

In the early days, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat wore some of the most colorful paint schemes in the history of naval aviation.  The Navy’s light gull gray over white high-visibility scheme was adopted beginning in 1955 and persisted into the mid-1980s when the TPS (or low visibility tactical paint scheme) became far more prevalent.  The white color on the underside and control surfaces was intended to reflect away as much light and thermal energy as possible from a nuclear blast, thereby granting the greatest degree of protection that paint could provide to these vulnerable parts of the airframe in the event that WWIII was unfolding anywhere near the jet.  It also looked good.

The panel lines demarcating the F-14’s wing body from the spoilers were very complex, and my personal experience can indeed state that masking these parts off using tape is very tedious, laborious, and a little hard to get just right.  With this vinyl pre-cut masking set, Furball Aero-Design continues to make the lives of scale modelers just a bit easier.  Designed for the Tamiya 1:48 F-14 kit, the mask drops down in a perfect fit on the wing.  If anyone is doing up their Tamiya F-14 using Furball’s Colors and Markings of US Navy Tomcats Part III (review HERE), this masking set is an ideal companion that will probably save a builder hours of work.

Many thanks to Furball Aero-Design for the review sample. You can find them on the web at http://www.furballaero-design.com/default.asp and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/FurballAeroDesign
