Eduard Photoetched Metal Detail Sets for the Hobby Boss Su-17 M4 -- 1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

The Su-17 Fitter has seen quite a lot of attention since 2016, following decades of neglect in the realm of injection-molded kits.  Kitty Hawk launched a family of 1:48 scale Su-17 and Su-22 kits while Hobby Boss has also produced a Su-17 M4 and Su-17 UM3 in 1:48 scale.  Eduard has released three photoetched metal detail sets, and two of these provide high-fidelity detail for the cockpit and ejection seat in the Hobby Boss kit.

First, let’s look at FE855 – the cockpit detail set. It’s a mostly pre-painted detail set that covers the instrument panel, side consoles, seat pad, HUD frame, throttles, ejection seat leg guards, and other small details in the Fitter’s front office.  This single fret contains 29 parts, and some are really quite fine.  The pre-painting quality is remarkable as always from Eduard, and the shade of gray for the instrument panel and side consoles looks like a really good match to the color of the Sukhoi cockpits.  The only possible critique I can consider is there seems to be a part that’s illustrated on the instructions that’s not on the fret.  Part 33 is to be a photoetched metal piece for the front cockpit floor.  It’s not on the fret, but it’s not a huge deal.  Still, just remove the kit’s “rudder pedals” (just raised bumps) and use parts 6 and 7 for the rudder pedal assembly and rudder pedals nonetheless.

Second, the kit’s KS-4 ejection seat features some rather unimpressive molded-on shoulder harnesses and no lap belts.  FE856 will fix that problem and does so quite effectively.  This set contains five pre-painted parts: shoulder harnesses, lap belts, and ejection handles.  The painting quality is really excellent, right down to the barely-discernable representation of what looks like warning stenciling on the ejection handles.

Both of these sets will go a long way to representing far more detail in the kit of your 1:48 scale Hobby Boss Su-17 M4.  Eduard also does an external PE metal detail set for this kit (48 931).  Though it’s not reviewed here, it looks like a characteristically outstanding Eduard metal detail set and might warrant a serious look for the scale modeler wishing to add all the detail that they can to their Hobby Boss Fitter.

We extend our sincere thanks to Eduard for the review sample. You can visit them on the web at http://www.eduard.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/EduardCompany/
