Eduard Photoetched Metal Detail Sets for the Kitty Hawk Su-17/22UM3K -- 1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

The Su-17 Fitter was one of the Soviet Union’s front-line fighter-bombers in the 1970s and 1980s and was particularly distinctive for its early use of variable geometry wings.  The need for a two-seat Fitter to fulfill training roles was met with the Su-17UM3 in Soviet service.  This trainer was exported to Soviet client states between 1978 and 1982 as the Su-22UM3K with the AL-21 powerplant.  Kitty Hawk’s 1:48 scale family of Su-17/22s includes a kit of the Su-17/22UM3K (see our review HERE).  Eduard has released a few detail sets for the two-seat Fitter, and here we take a look at their interior, exterior, and seatbelt detail sets.

Eduard 48951 Su-17/22UM3K Exterior:  The Kitty Hawk Fitter kits feature a very good level of external detail, but as scale modelers know, you can always add more detail.  The exterior set provides some 105 parts to enhance the exterior of the kit.  The parts include appropriately thin AOA vanes and other sensors to replace the kit parts on the Fitter’s big pitot tubes.  Other parts include PE wing fences, multiple antennas (including Polish AF-specific configurations), and a PE replacement cannon bay and cannon detail parts.  There are also parts for the bottom rails of a few pylons, main gear well components, open parabreak housing, and drop tank details.  Static wicks are also included and the flame holder in the engine’s exhaust looks to be far superior to any injection-molded part.

Eduard 49888 Su-17/22UM3K Interior:  the kit cockpit is not all that bad, and Kitty Hawk has been steadily improving their cockpits.  Still, this set provides some beautiful enhancements.  It consists of one pre-painted fret (36 parts) and one unpainted fret (44 parts).  The pre-painted parts provide replacement instrument panel, side consoles, and sidewalls.  The pre-painting quality is remarkable as always from Eduard, and the shade of gray for the instrument panel and side consoles looks like a really good match to the color of the Sukhoi cockpits.  The unpainted fret takes care of all the other details.  These include seat pads, the HUD frame, canopy sills and seals, rear view mirrors, and other small details in the Fitter’s front and back office

Eduard FE 889 Su-17/22UM3K Seatbelts STEEL:  The Kitty Hawk kits comes with photoetched shoulder harnesses and lap belts, but Eduard outdoes the kit parts here with pre-painted replacements here.  This set contains eight pre-painted parts:  shoulder harnesses, lap belts, and ejection handles.  The painting quality is really excellent, right down to the subtle shading-for-depth effect on the belts and the barely-discernable representation of warning stenciling on the ejection handles.

Any one of these photoetched metal detail sets will add some great features and depth of detail to your 1:48 Kitty Hawk Su-17/22UM3K.  In combination, they will really elevate your build in very important and noticeable ways.  When I build this kit, all of these sets will be incorporated into the project.

We extend our sincere thanks to Eduard for the review sample.  You can visit them on the web at http://www.eduard.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/EduardCompany/
