Eduard Photoetched Metal Detail Sets
for the Revell of Germany Tornado F.3 ADV -- 1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

The swing-wing Panavia Tornado is one of the most venerable of the Cold War combat aircraft.  The ADV variant was optimized as an air defense interceptor, and Revell of Germany released a 1:48 scale ADV.  A little ways back, we reviewed Revell of Germany’s Tornado F.3 ADV (see our review HERE).  It indeed is a good kit and the best 1:48 scale ADV out there, but as I commonly say, more detail can always be added.  Eduard has produced four photoetched metal detail sets for this kit, and here, we take a look at three of them.

Eduard 49880 Tornado F. 3 ADV Interior:  the kit cockpit is not all that bad, but certainly, PE parts can really up your game regarding the F.3 interior.  This set features one pre-painted color fret (containing 30 parts) and an unpainted fret (containing 35 parts).  The pre-painted parts include the pilot and WSO’s instrument panels and side consoles.  Use of this set will really transform the kit’s cockpit and confer a high level of detail here, from the precision-painted instrument panels and dial faces to the arrays of switches, knobs, and other details.  A fully articulated throttle quadrant is also provided, as are ejection seat details (minus the harnesses), cockpit sills, the HUD projector and frame, rear view mirrors, canopy seals, rudder pedals, and other details found on the unpainted fret.  There’s also a small piece of printed acetate used to simulate the HUD glass.

Eduard 49881 Tornado F. 3 ADV Undercarriage:  this set aims to significantly increase the detail and accuracy of the landing gear and gear wells.  This set also contains two frets.  The pre-painted fret features 39 parts, and the larger unpainted fret contains 107 parts.  These parts build up additional structure in the nose and main gear wells and include various black boxes (e.g., circuit breakers) and the nose gear well and main gear well walls and floors.  Other details include hydraulic and electric wiring for the nose and main gear, landing gear linkages and scissors, and data placards.

Eduard FE 881 Tornado F.3 ADV Seatbelts (STEEL):  One of the points I’ve critiqued in the Revell of Germany kit involved the molded-on seatbelts on the otherwise well-made injection-molded ejection seats.  These molded-on details are aimed at beginners, but they are really quite inaccurate.  This STEEL set features pre-painted shoulder harnesses, lap belts, backpad and seat cushion details, ejection handles, and buckles.  The details are sharp, and as usual for pre-painted Eduard parts, look great.  Even the stitching on the harnesses are represented and are not over done.

Any one of these photoetched metal detail sets will add some great features and depth of detail to your 1:48 scale Revell of Germany Tornado F.3.  They also produce an exterior detail set (Eduard # 48943) and a masking set (EX 574).  You can also get these sets bundled in a Big Ed set (BIG 49191).  In combination, these sets will really elevate your Revell of Germany Tornado F.3 ADV build in very important and noticeable ways.  When I build this kit, all of these sets will be incorporated into the project.

We extend our sincere thanks to Eduard for the review sample. You can visit them on the web at http://www.eduard.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/EduardCompany/
