AFTERMARKET REVIEW

Eduard Big Ed Set for the Revell P-51D-5NA Kit
1:32 Scale

vol_2_image

Revell’s recent new-tool 1:32 scale P-51D-5NA Mustang left a really positive impression upon us here at Detail & Scale (see our review HERE).  It is a very nicely done Mustang on quite a few levels.  But as I often say, there’s ALWAYS room for more detail!  Here, we take a look at Eduard’s Big Ed set for this kit.  For those inclined to use photoetched metal parts, Big Ed sets are popular and very useful offerings, since they combine several detail sets for a single subject and do so at savings for the scale modeler.  So, let’s see what Eduard has put together for the Revell P-51D-5.

Upon opening the thick cardboard envelope, you’ll find four photoetched metal sets (# 32419: P-51D-5 Exterior; #32420: P-51D Undercarriage; #32920: P-51D-5 Interior, and #33187 P-51D Seatbelts STEEL) along with one pre-cut self-adhesive masking set (#JX210 P-51D-5).

First up:  # 32419: P-51D-5 Exterior.  This set comes on one fret and consists of 26 parts.  This exterior PE detail set provides a range of excellent parts to enhance/replace the radiator air inlet screens, front and rear radiator assemblies, main gear well details, main gear scissors and the lower engine cowling vents.  The detail on this set is also top-notch, and the fine texture on the radiator screens is exceptionally well done and very, very fine.

Second, #32420:  P-51D Undercarriage provides essentially a new main gear well.  It consists of one fret that holds 69 parts.  After removing nearly all of the plastic details from the kit parts, this set provides essentially all of the structural elements of the Mustang’s main gear wells – floors, walls, and spars.  The kit’s wheel wells are good, but this is far better.  Also, when I look at these photoetched metal parts, I see a great canvass for further detailing (plumbing and wiring).  Most importantly, this set will allow you to replace over-scaled wheel well spars with superior PE parts.

Third, #32920:  P-51D-5 Interior provides two frets (one mostly pre-painted, the other unpainted) that comes in at 118 parts.  The pre-painted fret contains the instrument panel components, side console details, the elevator trim tab wheel, small individual panels including the circuit breaker panel, throttle quadrant and throttles, placards, and more (including lots of individual knobs, pull-handles, and other small-relief details).  The quality, detail, and accuracy of the pre-painted parts are outstanding, from the instrument dial faces to the very fine resolution that captures even the finest buttons and switches in the Mustang’s cockpit.

The unpainted fret provides a replacement seat frame, battery, and their associated wiring, seat armrests and headrests, throttle quadrant, canopy cross-brace, and plenty more smaller details.

Fourth, #33187:  P-51D Seatbelts STEEL provides beautiful pre-painted shoulder harnesses and lap belts.  The fine detail which Eduard’s pre-painting manufacturing technique can achieve is really amazing, and in 1:32 scale, the miniscule stitching on the belts is quite clear.  They achieve some nice shading/depth effects, too, and the instructions also keep in mind seat belt configuration vis-à-vis the two different seat styles that could be present in the early P-51D.  This set consists of seven parts, and includes even the very fine buckle latches.

Fifth and last up in this Big Ed set is #JX210:  the pre-cut, self adhesive masking set for the clear parts and wheel hubs.  These are pretty straightforward and provide masks for the windscreen, canopy, and wheel hubs and save a lot of time and effort while conferring a high degree of precision to the masking process.

In sum, this Big Ed set will go far to provide a lot more detail for your 1:32 scale Revell P-51D-5.  I can identify no errors or any disadvantages.  This bundled packaging of detail and masking sets is a winner from start to finish.

We extend our sincere thanks to Eduard for the review sample.  You can visit them on the web at http://www.eduard.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/EduardCompany/
