AFTERMARKET REVIEW

Eduard Big Ed Set for the Meng Models P-51D Kit
1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

Eduard’s Big Ed sets are popular offerings, since they combine several detail sets for a single subject and do so at savings for the scale modeler.  Meng made a splash with their new-tool 1:48 scale P-51D in late 2016, and Eduard has produced a range of photoetched details and masking set that are bundled together in this Big Ed offering.

First up: 48928 (P-51D Exterior).  This set comes on one fret and consists of 43 parts.  This exterior PE detail set provides a range of excellent parts to enhance/replace the radiator air inlet screens, front and rear radiator assemblies, main gear well details, main gear and tailwheel parts, wheel well details for both the the main gear and tail wheel wells, drop tank details, and fin assemblies for four sets of bombs.  The detail on this set is also top-notch, and the fine texture on the radiator screens is exceptionally well done and very, very fine.

Second, 49850 is the P-51D Interior set for the Meng kit.  Here, you get two PE frets that come in at 79 parts, and one small sheet of clear acetate.  One of the frets is pre-painted and the other is not.  The pre-painted fret contains the instrument panel components, side console details, the elevator trim tab wheel, small individual panels including the circuit breaker panel, throttle quadrant and throttles, map case, and more (including lots of individual knobs, pull-handles, and other small-relief details).  The quality, detail, and accuracy of the pre-painted parts are outstanding, from the instrument dial faces to the very fine resolution that captures even the finest buttons and switches in the Mustang’s cockpit.

The unpainted fret provides a replacement radio, battery, and their associated wiring, seat armrests and headrests, gunsight details, and canopy cross-brace.  While it’s not an “interior” detail, this set also comes with a set of the antennas representing the AN/APS-13 tail radar warning system.  These were essentially proximity warning indicators that told a pilot that a bandit was close up on their six-o’clock.  Externally, the system featured on either side of the vertical stabilizer two thin blade antennas and one loop antenna fitted perpendicular to the tail.  These would only be seen on the P-51D-25-NA and later models, so this should work out on the Meng kit that can build into a late-war Mustang.  Just check your references to make sure whatever airplane you’re building was configured with the AN/APS-13 system.  Eduard also provides a small template to mark and drill small mounting holes for the antennas.

Third, FE851 provides beautiful pre-painted shoulder harnesses and lap belts. The fine detail that Eduard’s pre-painting manufacturing technique can achieve is really amazing, and even in 1:48 scale, the miniscule stitching on the belts is quite clear.  This set consists of seven parts, and includes even the very fine buckle latches.

Last up in this Big Ed set is EX559, the pre-cut, self adhesive masking set for the clear parts.  These are pretty straightforward and provide masks for the windscreen and canopy, and save a lot of time and effort while conferring a high degree of precision to the masking process.

In sum, this Big Ed set will go far to provide a lot more detail for your 1:48 scale Meng Models P-51D.  I can identify no errors or any disadvantages.  This bundled packaging of detail and masking sets is a winner from start to finish.

We extend our sincere thanks to Eduard for the review sample. You can visit them on the web at http://www.eduard.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/EduardCompany/
