AFTERMARKET REVIEW

Eduard GBU-38 for the B-2A -- 1:72 Scale

vol_2_image

In the late 1990s, GPS-guided air-to-ground weapons came of age in the form of the Joint Direct Attack Munition, or the JDAM, and today represent a key tool used by everything from the F-16 to the B-2.  GPS weapons were also quite economical.  “Dumb” iron bombs, already in the inventory, could be converted into a JDAM by adding a set of strakes to the bomb body along with a modular guidance tail kit containing the GPS/INS gear.  The JDAM based on the Mk. 82 500-pound bomb is GBU-38.

In this Brassin set, Eduard provides parts for no less than eight GBU-38s with an eye towards outfitting the Model Collect B-2A Spirit.  The kit has bombs in its sprues, but they are like somebody’s ideas of what Mk. 82 bomb might look light versus what bombs actually look like (see our review HERE).  They are bad enough to say that they are generally unusable.  So yes – it’s Eduard to the rescue in a big way here.  You get eight GBU-38 JDAM bomb bodies with integral tailfin kits and 16 parts for optional nosecone attachments, and 20 photoetched metal parts.  There’s also a decal sheet containing markings for the bomb stenciling.

Overall, this is a very impressive set but with one caveat.  The resin casting is great, down to the photoetched conformal GPS antenna at the base of the tail kit.  The decals featuring the bomb stripes and other data also look great.  Eduard gives you two different sets of nose cones, so check your references to determine what’s is appropriate for your build.

The only hitch is that the kit bomb bay contains a big rotary launcher for the 1,000+ pound munitions carried by the B-2.  GBU-38s are NOT hung from a rotary launcher, but from a very different design of custom-built vertical racks made by Boeing.  The kit does not have these racks, and as far as I know, no one makes aftermarket racks.  So, in the meantime, you can use these in your B-2 with a scratchbuilt set of racks or on another suitable airplane.

Sincere thanks are owed to Eduard for the review sample.  You can visit them on the web at http://www.eduard.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/EduardCompany
