Eduard Detail Sets for the
FineMolds F-14A Tomcat Kit -- 1:72 Scale

vol_2_image

In 2015, FineMolds released the first new-tool F-14D Tomcat in 1:72 scale in quite a while.  They followed up with two F-14A kits in 2017 and 2018.  These are perhaps the best Tomcats in 1:72 scale, and they offer a range of unprecedented detailing opportunities in this scale.  Yet, there’s certainly even finer and more precise features that can be added.  Here, we take a look at a pair of Eduard photoetched metal detail sets for the FineMolds F-14 kits.

Eduard #SS650 – F-14A ZOOM:  This is an Eduard ZOOM set expressly focused on cockpit details.  Here, just over 100 parts come on a single fret.  Most of them are pre-painted.  This set is designed to completely replace all the injection-molded plastic details of the FineMolds cockpit.  You get a complete instrument panel for the pilot and the RIO, side consoles, new rudder pedals, the pilot’s knee circuit breaker panels, the RIO’s wide array of circuit breakers in the back seat, and other bulkhead features such as the air conditioning vents.

Additionally, there’s a rather wide range of enhancements for the kit’s GRU-7A ejection seats.  These include nicely shaped and pre-painted face curtain and lower ejection handles, shoulder harnesses and lap belts, parachute pack details, and leg restraints.  Not seen too often in 1:72 scale, the latter details are a really nice touch.  I’ve never been a huge fan of how Eduard represents the GRU-7A shoulder harnesses as they lay a little oddly.  They might need a little work in terms of re-shaping them.  Do note, however, that the parts for the back seat in this set represent a pre-LANTIRN equipped F-14A.  The circular TID (Tactical Information Display – a.k.a. the radar screen) is included, but there’s no PTID (Programmable Tactical Information Display) used by the RIO in conjunction with the LANTIRN pod system.  The TID was replaced by the PTID when the F-14 went all-in with its strike mission that it assumed late in its service career.  So, this set is good for any F-14A so modified before the mid-1990s.  Be careful, though. Some of these parts are really small and require pretty careful handling when assembling.

Eduard #73650 – F-14A Interior:  This more complete PE detail set contains the ZOOM set just described above and an additional unpainted PE detail set containing 88 more parts.  The additional PE parts cover the gamut of additional details, including major improvements to the nose gear, main gear, and the nose gear and main gear wells (both in terms of wiring and structural features).  There’s also a set of new nose gear doors and door hinges.  Other items provide for the inner canopy frame and canopy hooks, rear view mirrors, the turtle deck behind the RIO, and an extended boarding ladder.  There are also details for the AIM-54 missile pallets, the glove pylons, arresting hook dashpot, chaff and flare buckets, and the TF-30 powerplant’s afterburner flame holders.

Depending on what you want to do and the scope of your FineMolds F-14A, either of these sets can add some distinct and very accurate features to your build.

We extend our sincere thanks to Eduard for the review sample. You can visit them on the web at http://www.eduard.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/EduardCompany/
