AFTERMARKET REVIEW

Eduard Sea Fury FB.11 Exterior (for the Airfix kit)
1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

One of the most remarkable fighter aircraft to emerge in the 1940s was the Hawker Sea Fury.  It was the last propeller-driven fighter to serve with the Royal Navy and was among the fastest single piston-engine aircraft ever built – effectively serving as the bridge to the jet age.  The Sea Fury entered service in 1947 and made its mark in Korea as both a dogfighter (holding its own and even being victorious against the MiG-15) and as a ground attack platform.  In 2018, Airfix released a new-tool 1:48 scale Sea Fury FB.11.  While we have not reviewed the kit here at detailandscale.com, I have had a chance to examine it on my own, and it looks like a great kit.  The initial buzz and enthusiasm about this kit seem rather well justified.

However, there’s a few places where the kit could be said to fall short or be lacking in detail.  In some other spots, more detail could certainly be added or enhanced.  Here, we take a look at Eduard’s exterior set for the Airfix kit (one of several offerings for the FB.11; see below).

This photoetched metal parts sets come on two frets and contains some 152 parts.  As would be expected from Eduard, the quality of the PE parts manufacturing are the best in the business and the detail is awesome.  This set provides a near complete replacement for the kit’s main gear wells (arguably, the most detail-weak part of the kit), and I would argue this is the biggest advantage to this set.  The PE main gear well is richly detailed and fairly elaborate with lots of contributing metal parts, leaving only the plumbing and wiring for the scale modeler to take care of by themselves.

Other details provided in this set are a complete tail wheel well, a complete set of wingfold details (these parts really enhance this part of the kit), new main gear well doors (nice scale thickness here) and main gear hydraulic lines, inboard tire hubs, ignition wires for the HVAR rockets, new bomb fins, and bomb nose and tail fuse spinners.

Overall, this set will bring a great deal more detail to your Airfix Sea Fury and make a very good kit a lot better.  Eduard also has a PE cockpit detail set, seatbelts in their STEEL line, a landing flaps set, pre-cut canopy masks, and a Big Ed set that bundles them all together.  While we haven’t had a chance to check out the other offerings, they look to equal the quality of this set and any one of them will elevate the level of detail of your Airfix Sea Fury project.

We extend our sincere thanks to Eduard for the review sample.  You can visit them on the web at http://www.eduard.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/EduardCompany/
