Eduard PAVE Tack Pod for the F-4 Phantom -- 1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

The revolution in precision guided munitions that began in the late stages of the Vietnam war gave rise of a new generation of laser guided bombs and targeting systems in the late 1970s and early 1980s.  The Ford Aerospace AN/AVQ-26 PAVE Tack was an electro-optical targeting pod developed for the USAF.  It used a laser designator and a forward-looking infrared sensor to identify and guide laser-guided bombs to their targets.  The PAVE Tack system was employed by the F-4 Phantom II but was most famously used by F-111Fs during Operations EL DORADO CANYON and DESERT STORM.  In the latter conflict, its use helped bring about the term "tank plinking.”  In many ways, the PAVE Tack system was the direct ancestor to the LANTIRN targeting pod.

In this recent release by Eduard in their Brassin Line, scale modelers finally get a really nice and very accurate PAVE Tack pod for use on the F-4E and RF-4C.  The pod was carried on the centerline station.  This set contains four cast resin parts: the pod body, the sensor turret, the protective sensor shield or hood, and the pylon adaptor.  There’s also a small decal sheet printed by Eduard that provides all the markings and stencils for the PAVE Tack pod itself.

The casting is flawless.  The detail is superb and the parts breakdown is simple and very straightforward.  Eduard’s pod compares pretty much perfectly to my reference photos of the PAVE Tack pod on display at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.  If you have a project that calls for this targeting pod on your F-4, look no further.  It certainly will make for a one of the more interesting and unique stores configuration seen on the gun-nosed or recce Phantom II.  I’d add that it is also rather reasonably priced.

We extend our sincere thanks to Eduard for the review sample.  You can visit them on the web at http://www.eduard.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/EduardCompany/
