Eduard Detail Sets for the Great Wall Hobby
F-15C MSIP II Kit -- 1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

For the last 40 years, the F-15 Eagle has ruled the skies.  With its 104:0 kill-to-loss ratio, it is the undisputed modern air combat titleholder.  Hasegawa’s F-15C kit was similarly the best of its kind in 1:48 scale for a few decades as well – until Great Wall Hobby came along with their Eagle family of kits beginning in 2013.  There have now been three boxings of their F-15C that depict the Multi-Stage Improvement (MSIP) II configuration.  This was the major systems upgrade that outfitted the F-15C with the APG-70 radar and AIM-120 AMRAAM capability in the early 1990s.  Here, we take a look at a pair of Eduard photoetched metal detail sets for the GWH F-15C MSIP II kits.

Eduard #FE 949 – F-15C MSIP II ZOOM:  This is an Eduard ZOOM set 100 percent focused on cockpit details and avionics.  Here, 94 parts are found on a single fret.  Most of them are pre-painted.  This set is designed to completely replace all the injection-molded plastic details of the GWH cockpit.  You get a complete instrument panel for the pilot and the detailed instrument dials are treated with Eduard’s “raised glass effect.”  The pre-painting is really impressive and effective.  New side consoles are provided, and I really like how the rudder pedal assemblies are integrated into the sides of the instrument panel base.

There are also a range of ejection seat details including the drogue chute lanyards, the canopy breaker, and lots of little features on the sides and rear of the seat.  However, the pre-painted part for the ACES II placard does not have the characteristic ACES II art, and I am not sure why.  This set also lacks (by design) shoulder harnesses and lap belts.  Eduard provides those in set # FE950.

The GWH kit also has provisions to open up the forward fuselage avionics bays and radome.  This set features all the box faces as pre-painted details and they look great, all the way down to their very fine stenciling.  There are also provisions for the boxes in Bay 1 behind the pilot’s seat.  The pre-painted APG-70 radar dish and separate dipole antennas is a highlight of this set.  Just note that some of these parts are incredibly small – use care when assembling them.  There’s also a small clear acetate sheet providing the HUD combing glass.

Eduard #49949 – F-15C MSIP II Interior:  This set is somewhat misnamed.  You do get the ZOOM set just described above and along with an additional unpainted PE detail set containing approximately 170 more parts that covers a wide range of additional interior and exterior details.  The additional PE parts cover the gamut, including more cockpit details, major improvements to the nose gear, main gear, and the nose gear and main gear wells.  Other items provide the inner canopy frame and canopy hooks, HUD frame, rear view mirrors, the rear canopy decking, wiring in the speed brake well, the main wheel brake assemblies, arresting hook details, and intake details featuring the fine boundary layer perforations that cover the tops and parts of the sides of the air intakes.  It’s comprehensive.

A key part of this set attends to the fact that the kit’s F101 engine nozzles could use some additional and finer details.  The kit engine nozzle actuating rods are particularly over-scaled in their thickness.  Each of the individual nozzle actuators and actuator rods are included here as PE metal.  They are a true, big-time improvement over the kit parts.   There’s also a very nice, multi-part set of afterburner flame holders as well.

Depending on what you want to do and the scope of your GWH F-15C MSIP II kit, either of these sets can add some distinct and very accurate features to your build.   You really can’t go wrong here.

We extend our sincere thanks to Eduard for the review sample. You can visit them on the web at http://www.eduard.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/EduardCompany/
