Eduard Big Sin Bf 109G-6/U4 Essential for the Tamiya Kit -- 1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

In 2018, Eduard released multiple detail sets for Tamiya’s outstanding 1:48 scale Bf 109G-6 (see out review HERE).  One of the sub-variants of the G-6 was the G-6/U4.  The G-6/U4 variant was externally identical to the standard G-6, but internally, a 30 mm Motorkanone MK 108 cannon was mounted to fire through the propeller hub.  It replaced the standard 20 mm MG 151.  Some 800 were ordered but only 180 were produced between May and December 1943 before Bf 109 production moved on to other, more advanced versions.  Eduard provides parts and detail sets to build a G-6/U4 from the Tamiya kit.  These various sets are bundled together and at a discount in the “Essential” and “Advanced” Big Sin Sets.  Here, we take a look at the Essential Big Sin set for the Tamiya kit.

The Bf 109G-4/U4 Essential Big Sin Set contains four individual Brassin sets and a pre-cut self-adhesive masking set:  #648400 (Bf 109G-6 Wheels), #648402 (Bf 109G-6 Exhaust Stacks), #648403 (Bf 109G-6 Gun Pods), #648411 (Bf 109G-6/U4 Cockpit), and #EX583 (Bf 109G-6 Masks).

#648400 -Bf 109G-6 Wheels:  the kit wheels are nice, but Eduard provides some gorgeous cast resin main wheels and tail wheels for the Tamiya kit.  The detail is impressive, from the inboard and outboard wheel hubs, manufacturer’s imprimatur on the tire sidewalls, the complex tread patterns, and the realistic and scale-appropriate bulge to the bottom of the tire.  The casting is flawless and a real treat for the eyes. There’s also a pre-cut masking set in here for the wheel hubs to facilitate quick, easy, and precise masking.

#648402 -Bf 109G-6 Exhaust Stacks:  regular readers will know that your reviewer is not a fan of flat-faced exhaust stacks that are commonly seen in injection-molded piston engine aircraft kits.  This Eduard set provides a pair of cast resin exhaust stacks that are designed to drop right into the kit.  They have nicely recessed exhaust stack faces that, especially with a touch of an acrylic or oil wash, will provide a great illusion of depth and shadow.  This set also comes with a small photoetched metal fret that provides the all-important parts for the exhaust stack frame.

#648403 - Bf 109G-6 Gun Pods:  if you are building a Bf 109G-6 variant fitted with the underwing gun pods, this set provides replacement cast resin gun pods that feature a complete interior and open access panels.  You get the pod, the complete cannon assembly (from the barrel to the breech), various other hardware details, and ten photoetched metal detail parts on a single fret that includes the outboard access panel framing.

#648411 - Bf 109G-6/U-4 Cockpit:  the Tamiya Bf 109G-6 cockpit is quite good, especially for an injection molded plastic kit.  This Brassin set is a complete replacement for the kit cockpit, and its combination of cast resin parts, photoetched metal details, clear acetate parts, and decal sheet represent a rather exceptional step-up in detail.

The Brassin Bf 109G-6 cockpit consists of 22 cast resin parts, 25 pre-painted photoetched metal parts on one fret, 33 unpainted photoetched metal parts on a second fret, a clear piece of acetate containing seven clear parts pertaining to three different styles of gunsight glass, and a decal sheet.  The quality of casting and the rich detail of these parts makes me ponder the possibility that this is the best 1:48 scale Brassin cockpit detail set that Eduard has produced to date.

The cockpit is completely represented here, from the cockpit tub, gorgeously cast sidewalls, pilot’s bucket seat, stick, rudders, trim wheels, gunsight, instrument panel, and canopy details.  The pre-painted photoetched metal details look great, and if you were hoping to replace the kit’s decal seat belts, look no further.  The pre-painted instrument panel PE parts are very impressive in this scale, though they do tend to be more “idealized” dial face details than accurate representations of the real thing.

If PE parts aren’t your forte, an alternate resin instrument panel (Part R75) is provided with full relief detail to be used with the decal instrument faces.  It’s hard to say which option will provide a better look.  There are also tiny PE parts for various knobs and control handles…and I mean they’re SMALL.  Handle with care as these parts will be easy to lose.  There’s also a few clear resin parts here, including the section of clear tubing in the fuel line that runs on the right side of the cockpit sidewall (a detail missed in the Tamiya kit).  Do note that this set is not a straight-up, drop-in set.  To fit properly, you’ll need to sand or grind away the kit cockpit sidewalls.

#EX583 - Bf 109G-6 Masks:  this pre-cut self-adhesive masking set provides painting masks for the Tamiya Bf 109G-6’s windscreen, canopy, and wheel hubs.  I am a huge fan of Eduard masks for their clean precision, how they save me time, and how good the final product looks.  This set is no exception. The extra set of wheel hub masks is a nice little bonus (cool!).

Any one of these Eduard products will add some great features, complexity, and truly impressive detail to your 1:48 scale Tamiya Bf 109G-6/U4.  Combined in this Big Sin set, they will collectively add some incredible details to an already gorgeous kit.  Further, as they are bundled together in a Big Sin offering, you get them at a savings when compared to buying them individually.  When I build this kit, every part in this Big Sin Essential set will be incorporated into the project.  You can count on it!

We extend our sincere thanks to Eduard for instrument panels the review sample. You can visit them on the web at http://www.eduard.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/EduardCompany/
