Eduard Big Sin Bf 109G-6/U4 Advanced for the Tamiya Kit -- 1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

In 2018, Eduard released multiple detail sets for Tamiya’s outstanding 1:48 scale Bf 109G-6 (see out review HERE).  One of the sub-variants of the G-6 was the G-6/U4.  The G-6/U4 variant was externally identical to the standard G-6, but internally, a 30mm Motorkanone MK 108 cannon was mounted to fire through the propeller hub.  It replaced the standard 20 mm MG 151.  Some 800 were ordered but only 180 were produced between May and December 1943 before Bf 109 production moved on to other, more advanced versions.  Eduard provides parts and detail sets to build a G-6/U4 from the Tamiya kit.  These various sets are bundled together and at a discount in the “Essential” and “Advanced” Big Sin Sets.  Here, we take a look at the Advanced Big Sin set for the Tamiya kit.

The Bf 109G-4 Advanced Big Sin Set contains two individual Brassin sets and a photoetched metal detail set:  #648404 (Bf 109G-6 Radio Compartment), #648406 (Bf 109G-6/U4 Engine), and # FE892 (Bf 109G-6 Seatbelts).

#648404 - Bf 109G-6/U4 Radio Compartment:  while the Tamiya kit has a lot of great interior detail, they did not include the radio compartment.  There’s a small access hatch on the left side of the fuselage behind the cockpit about halfway the distance to the tail.  When opened, ground crews could access the communications gear carried by the legendary WWII fighter.

This set contains six perfectly cast resin parts accompanied by five photoetched parts on one small fret.  To use this set, you’ll need to cut open the access hatch and thin the interior fuselage ribs.  The set provides resin interior fuselage details (both left and right sides), the radio gear and gear rack mounted on the compartment’s forward bulkhead, and the mid-compartment rack and radios.  The PE parts include the exterior hatch, hatch frame, some radio cabling, and two pre-painted radio knobs.  Sure, you might not be able to see a whole lot of this set through the small open hatch, but these are cool interior details that will add a great touch to your Tamiya -109 kit.

#648427 - Bf 109G-6/U4 Engine:  If you read these reviews regularly, you know that your reviewer is quite enamored with the exceptional casting seen in the Brassin Fw 190A engines.  In this DB 605 engine set for the Bf 109G, I think Eduard has once again raised the bar.  The casting is exquisite and again technically flawless.  The elegant complexity of this set emerges from the 53 cast resin parts and the 46 unpainted photoetched metal parts.  It’s far more involved than any single casting could ever accomplish.

This engine set is above and beyond what I’d call awesome.  It features the in-line engine, engine mounts, firewall, cowling, supercharger, fuel injector pumps, magnetos, gear boxes, oil filters, scavenger oil pumps, pipes, hoses, wires – everything.  I scoured my own references and recent photos I shot of the engine in the Bf 109G-10 on display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force.  I could not find any perceptible discrepancies or inaccuracies.  The Daimler-Benz 600-series engine is beautifully represented here.  Again, while the kit engine is really nice, it does not come even close to the detail and fidelity of this set.

Other details in this Brassin offering include the nose-mounted machine guns, ammo chutes, gorgeously cast engine access panels, and two styles of the supercharger’s air intake, including the Trop variant.  The exhaust stacks are each cast as individual parts with nicely recessed exhaust ports.

#FE 892 - Bf 109G-6 Seatbelts:  this pre-painted photoetched metal ZOOM set contains six pre-painted parts for the shoulder harnesses and lap belts.  It looks great, and the belt parts even feature ultra-fine pre-painted stitching details and subtle shading/shadow effects.

For all the value and detail that it brings, this gorgeous BIG SIN will add some amazing details to your 1:48 scale Bf 109G-6/U4.  We extend our sincere thanks to Eduard for instrument panels the review sample.  You can visit them on the web at http://www.eduard.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/EduardCompany/
