Eduard BIG ED Set for the Tamiya F-14D Tomcat
1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

Tamiya’s 1:48 scale F-14D was released in mid-2018 and has become another instant favorite among scale modelers.  In standard fashion, the folks at Eduard have developed a series of photoetched metal and masking sets for this kit.  Here, they bundle four detail sets and a masking set at a savings to the customer in this recent BIG ED set.  Let’s take a look at what’s in this package.

Eduard FE 48969 F-14D Engines STEEL:  This set seems like it was intended to provide really nice flame holders for the engine’s afterburner section, but with all the extra room on the fret, other related (and unrelated parts) were added.  So yes – the flame holders look great, but you get a bunch of other airframe vents such as the horizontal stabilizer actuator cooling vent, the air conditioning system intake fans (which are REALLY nicely done!), the air condition system vents inside the cockpit, and a few other features including both exterior nose gear well door surfaces.

Eduard FE 48970 F-14D Exterior:  This big single fret contains 97 parts by my count.  Among other features, you get catapult launch bar details, nose gear and nose gear well plumbing and wiring, nose gear well interior and exterior door details, a new boarding ladder and boarding ladder step details, the horizontal stabilizer actuator cooling vents, the air conditioning system intake fans, main gear well door details, and main gear well wiring and plumbing.  Other nice touches are the chaff and flare dispenser buckets, arresting hook actuator, and main gear parts such as the tie downs and hydraulic lines that go to the brakes.  Detail parts are also provided for the Phoenix missile pallets, Sidewinder rail details, and the exhaust caps for the Sidewinder and Sparrow missiles.

Eduard FE 49933 F-14D:  This set features 52 pre-painted detail parts on one fret and includes a second fret with another fret with 28 unpainted parts.  The kit cockpit is not all that bad, but certainly, PE parts can really up your game regarding F-14D’s interior.  The first fret here features one pre-painted color fret containing 52 parts.  You get a complete cockpit instrument panel and side console replacement for the pilot and RIO.  There’s a high level of detail here, from the precision-painted instrument dial faces with the raised clear surfaces atop the instrument dials to various warning indicator panels, the arrays of switches, knobs, and other details such as the RIO’s side and aft-facing circuit breaker panels which can be very hard to paint.  There are also various handles such as the gear selector level, tail hook lever, and canopy jettison handles.  To get everything to fit, of course, some prep work with the kit parts will be necessary (e.g., sanding all the instrument panels and side consoles flat).  One particularly nice touch here is that you get parts for both the original TID screen for the RIO (same configuration as the F-14A/B) and the later PTID display installed when the F-14D became LANTIRN-capable in the mid/late 1990s.  Thus, you have details for correct rear cockpit for either any early or late F-14D.

The second unpainted fret features the cockpit sills, canopy locking hooks, windscreen and canopy frames, rear cockpit decking, rudder pedals, and various other small details.  Overall, these parts look excellent but a word of note – the pilot’s center rearview mirror was deleted in the F-14D to accommodate the addition of the heads-up display.  Eduard includes the mirror in error here, and its elementary to remove it from Part #51.

Eduard FE 934 F-14D Seatbelts STEEL:  The Martin-Baker Mk. 14 NACES ejection seats in the kit are pretty nice but they lack realistic seatbelt details.  Here, this set provides for the shoulder harnesses and lap belts for the ejection seat.  These parts look really great and capture the detail of the real thing quite nicely.  The pre-painted details are nice, right down to the subtle and ultra-fine stitching details on the belts, some shading effects, and the very nice pre-painted ejection handles.

Eduard EX 624 F-14 Masks:  This self-adhesive pre-cut masking set covering up the windscreen, canopy, nose gear wheel hubs, and main gear wheel hubs.  As always, I am a huge fan of Eduard’s masks since the are so precisely made to provide the builder very successful and exact masking work which saves a ton of time.

Every single one of these sets is a winner and will bring a lot of rich detail to your Tamiya F-14D.  Bundled together, you save almost $33.00 over the individual set costs.  The sets in this BIG ED offering provide a winning range of accurate and important details for your Tamiya Tomcat.

We extend our sincere thanks to Eduard for the review sample.  You can visit them on the web at http://www.eduard.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/EduardCompany/
