Eduard Big Ed Set for the Kinetic F/A-18B Hornet
1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

In the opinion of many, the Kinetic 1:48 F/A-18A/A+/B/C/D family of kits have indeed supplanted the venerable Hasegawa family of Legacy Hornets as the best in this scale.  While I am still quite fond of the Hasegawa Hornets, the Kinetic F/A-18s do feature better engineering and lots of great detail, especially regarding the aircraft exterior and a solid set of external stores.  Yet, it can be argued that there still some shortcomings.  Here, we look at Eduard’s BIG ED bundle of detail sets for Kinetic’s two-seat F/A-18B.  These sets not only rectify the kit’s potential issues, but they elevate the overall detail in some pretty impressive ways.

This BIG ED SET contains three detail sets and one masking set: #48960 F/A-18B/D Exterior, #49915 F/A-18B Interior, #FE917 F/A-18B/D Seatbelts STEEL, and EX604 F/A-18B/D Masks.

Eduard # 48960 F/A-18B/D Exterior:  as mentioned, the Kinetic kit has some great exterior details, but Eduard pushes the envelope a bit further.  Here, a single fret provides 65 parts that include a replacement boarding ladder well and boarding ladder, the refueling probe door, various exterior vents, the intake boundary layer plate, chaff and flare dispensers, all the low-voltage formation (or slime) light frames, and bulkhead details for both the nose gear well and main gear wells.  It all looks quite good and accurate as well.

Eduard #49915 F/A-18B Interior:  The Kinetic Legacy Hornet is a winner when it comes to exterior details, but the kit cockpit will probably leave you little underwhelmed.  Eduard provides a game-changing level of detail for the kit’s cockpit.  This set features one pre-painted fret with 59 parts and an unpainted fret with another 21 parts.  One sheet of clear acetate provides two sets of parts for the combined HUD glass.  For both the front and back seats of the F/A-18B, you get a complete set of cockpit instrument panels, all the multi-function displays, instrument gauge clusters, and full side console replacements.  Other parts include the HUD frame and ejection seat handles.  It’s a major step up from the kit.  The canopy sill, interior canopy frame, canopy locking lugs, and rear-view mirrors are also included.  Eduard’s usual high level of detail is seen in every part in this set, from the precision-painted instrument dial faces with the raised clear surface effect to various warning indicator panels, the arrays of switches, knobs, and other details.

Eduard #FE 917 F/A-18B/D Seatbelts STEEL:  the kit’s SJU-17A ejection seat is pretty good.  The seat pads feature no molded-on detail (that’s a positive in my opinion), and photoetched belts are provided in the kit.  Yet, there are two major problems.  First, I would say the kit’s PE shoulder harnesses and lap belts are basic to the point of being somewhat inaccurate and they are missing various details.  Second, the PE fret included in the issue of this kit with parts to build an F/A-18B appears to be the same fret as the single seat F/A-18A/C and there’s only one set of belts are provided.  Whoops!

Eduard comes to the rescue with this ZOOM set with their pre-painted STEEL photoetched set that provides 22 parts.  Overall, it looks great.  The harness colors are in the olive drab range and that works.  There’s even stitching detail and shading/shadow effects.  The only thing missing here are the blue leg restraints.  Sure, it might be an oversight, but if you are using PE belts to begin with, it is likely well within your skill level to easily fabricate your own.

Eduard #EX604 F/A-18B/D Masks:  this set provides windscreen and canopy masks for the two-seat Hornet.  I’m a big fan of any and all of Eduard’s pre-cut self-adhesive masks.  They save a lot of time and confer some serious precision masking capability to your clear parts.  One might note that most Eduard masking sets contain masks for the wheel hubs, but in the Kinetic kit, the wheel hubs are independent parts and there’s no need for such masks here.

In summary, all of these of these sets will represent a comprehensive detail upgrade to your 1:48 scale Kinetic F/A-18B.  I place a lot of value on an accurate cockpit, and you’ll find some excellent details here.  Further, as a BIG ED set, you save a bundle (more than $20.00) if you purchased these sets separately.
